Hi, I tried to perform a an upgrade of Commvault from 11.20 on server 2012 to a different VM on server 2019 running version 11.28 and SQL 2019.  I installed and try to recover from the old database. I am getting an error in the CSRecoveryAssistant file log,

Error: License activation is required. Please provide a valid license file.

I am confused as I backed up my existing environment. How can I get past this as the Install is dependant on me clearing this error?

hi, checking the logs it looks like you have a problem with the sqlexec_cv user. what cause the login failing.

So i would suggest to check that first.

@jargo19 so you are trying to perform a DR restore with a DB copy of a Commcell running 11.20 to a fresh installed 11.28?

@jargo19 so you are trying to perform a DR restore with a DB copy of a Commcell running 11.20 to a fresh installed 11.28?

Hi, I am trying to upgrade commcell from 11.20 to 11.28. The 11.20 is running on server 2012 and SQL 2012. The new box I am installing 11.28 is running Server 2019 and SQL 2019. I exported the DB from the old commcell and shut down the old server. Following the notes from CommServe Hardware Refresh Overview (commvault.com) I tried to install commcell on the new server and import the old database. everything went fine till i got that error from the LOG which i shared.

@jargo19 Well I do expect that you will have to use the same software version, so both feature release and maintenance release aligned on the new system. You can't just load a database from an older version on a server with a newer version without upgrading the database. Hence I would upgrade your current installation from 11.20 to 11.28 on the existing system and then perform the hardware refresh procedure. Personally I would go for the second procedure → "Install the CommServe Software, and then Restore the Database".

I just reviewed the logs once again and it does seem to be performing the DB upgrade but something is wrong with this account in SQL. Most likely there is a de-sync between the password of the account on the registry and database. Did you follow the second procedure "Install the CommServe Software, and then Restore the Database" ?. It might very well be better to use the first method which instructs to prompt the location to the DR backup set during the installation.
