Hi Team, Could you please help us with below queries on Data Restore/Recall:

  • Starting with what the customer/client does to initiate data READs

    • What is the workflow? (E.g: whether it will first view the custom metadata, then initiate reads of the whole objects)

  • How is data read back?

    • whole object reads, range reads, select query, etc.

  • How to Capture throughput stats

    • Throughput, IOPs, latency

Hello @Lahari

Can you let us know what type of backup you are restoring and what type of storage you are restoring from?

In general, there is no workflow that you need to run unless restoring from archive cloud storage.

We also read only the data needed for the restore which is tracked by the CommServe database.

Hi Collin, to answer your query:

Can you let us know what type of backup you are restoring and what type of storage you are restoring from?:
We are having 3 different workloads: VM , SQL , Oracle DB in our commcell.

We are taking backups to and restoring from S3 compatible HCP Storage.

Hello @Jass Gill

Unless the storage is configured as Archive there is no workflow necessary. You can run a restore like any other by Browse\Restore.

Browsing and Restoring Data Using Backup Job History - https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/98933_browsing_and_restoring_data_using_backup_job_history.html

If you are using it as Archive Storage, you will need to use the Archive Recall workflow, which depending on the type of data will be automatic or will need to be manually triggered.

Restoring Data from Archive Cloud Storage - https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/9218_restoring_data_from_archive_cloud_storage.html

When reading the data we read only the files needed for the restore. Throughput can be found in CVD.log on the MediaAgent reading the data via the Media Read Speed statistic. Once a thread is complete you can see granular details in CvPergMgr.log on the MediaAgent. We cannot test IOPs to\from a cloud bucket. We can only measure upload and download speed. This can be seen in CloudStat.log and CloudActivity.log (with debug set to 3) on the MediaAgent.

Thank you,
Collin
