Hi,
we have in a branch office an physical windows media agent.
Actually the hardware is down (we are finding out why….).
When this media agent is down will another media agent automatically take over?

Regards
Dennis

Hello Dennis !

As allways the answer is “it depends”.

If the downed MediaAgent was the only MediaAgent servicing the StoragePolicy/BackupPlan then other MediaAgents will not take over.

If that is the case, and you are uncertain on how long your MediaAgents will remain down you should reassign your clients to other storagepolicies.

If your MediaAgents are paired so that there are several MediaAgents servicing the same StoragePolicies/BackupPlans then the other MediaAgents will take over ( if ...).

If your downed MediaAgent is a part of a DDB you may still experience problems with your backup. If you have time critical backups ( Archivelog backup for Oracle (RAC)) you should assign these backups to a non-deduplicated storage policy.

And the worst scenario is if you downed MediaAgent had local mountPoints you will not be able to restore data from these MountPoints.
