Hello

with a Netapp storage array I have made an Intellisnap backup of an Exchange DBs that are on different LUNs but on the same volume, what appen if I perform a restore of a single DB with the options “Use hardware revert capabililty if available” ? can Commvault leverage the the Netapp feature of restore a single file (the LUN) from the snapshot and revert only the affected LUN or Commvault will tell Netapp to revert the entire volume?

Regards

Federico

Hi @Federico

The option is replying on the revert function of the array itself. If I am not mistaken the revert is per volume and is noted as “volume” multiple times in CV docs as well as netapp

https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/36908_revert_snapshot.html

https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/cloud_volumes/aws/task_reverting_volume_to_snapshot.html

Hello Scott

Netapp can restore a single file from a snapshot with commnad "volume snapshot restore-file….." and for I know a LUN is a “file” on the Ontap filesystem

https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap-cli-98/volume-snapshot-restore-file.html

Restoring a single file is not the same as revert operation.

Yes, you can restore a single DB from the snap backup taken in CV

I will let those more familiar with Netapp and snapshot revert operation comment further...

restore (revert) a single LUN from a Netapp snapshot is a supported operation by the storage, the only caveat is to correctly calculate the space required in the volume

https://kb.netapp.com/Advice_and_Troubleshooting/Data_Storage_Software/ONTAP_OS/Restoring_a_single_LUN_from_a_snapshot_causes_volume_to_fill_up

just an update… official Commvault Support answer:

“We will send the revert at volume level”

so make an attention on what storage layout do you have in place because in my case the revert operation will revert many Exchange DBs and not only the desired one

Interestingly, I’m not 100% certain but do remember that recall that we allow single VMware VMs to be reverted on NFS datastores hosted via NetApp. Its the only configuration that allows reverts for VSA.

I’m sure we would be using that command to revert on the VM files related to that specific VM. I have not done it in many years though.
