There are some plans for moving some on-prem sharepoint into Office 365, and because of this we’re looking at what options there are for backup of this.

One possible issue we’ve discovered is the following, that we would like an answer to:

Can you backup sharepoint online were the tenant has “LegacyAuthProtocolsEnabled” set to False ?

According to this information it seems to not be possible: Configuring SharePoint Agent for Office 365 (commvault.com)

  • The default tenant setting for LegacyAuthProtocolsEnabled is true. Changing it to false will impact connectivity from Sharepoint Online Management Shell to the tenant. Also, the backup operation is not supported, if you change LegacyAuthProtocolsEnabled to false.

But according to this SharePoint Online (commvault.com) you can use both basic or modern authentication.

Authentication

You can use either basic or modern authentication to access data for backups and restores.

Based on our documentation, you should be able to run backups with the V2 SharePoint agent with that setting set to “False”
