We are migrating VMware VMs to a new NetApp storage array via Storage vMotion. In our current environment we use VMFS datastores. It is our intention to create vVol datastores on the new NetApp storage and migrate from VMFS to vVols. Is there anything we need to know or be aware of as it relates to our Commvault backups? Is there anything we need to change in our Commvault environment or change in our approach to performing Commvault backups? Thank you!

Hi Wernermp,

Protection of VMs residing on vVOL datastores also supported by both streaming and IntelliSnap backups. with NetApp VMFS DS VMs were you using IntelliSnap or streaming features? For streaming nothing need to be changed. When using IntelliSnap for vVOL datastore VMs has to use ‘virtual server agent snap’ as snap engine instead of earlier ‘NetApp’ snap engine. Please refer to below BOL page for other retention and considerations when protecting VMs on vVOL datastores.

Thank you, Gopinath!! That is the 2nd thing I have been looking into, streaming or IntelliSnap. Right now are am leaning towards IntelliSnap unless we come across some compelling reason why we shouldn’t or why streaming would be better. Thankyou!
