Hi,

I’m configuring O365 mailbox backup through Command Center since this is the way to configure using azure AD. I understand that the backup/ archive of O365 is incremental forever. My audit required me to have the monthly copy of my backup to be stored offsite (tape). For O365, how can I achieved this? Can I add Full backup at the plan level? Since synthetic full is not running at all.

Fauzi

Hi @Fauzi SDS,

There is the option to ‘convert to full’ but only in the JAVA console, not the Command Center Console.

The job type however does not change to a ‘FULL’ or ‘SYNTHETIC FULL’ type therefore if using a ‘SELECTIVE’ copy type, the job will not qualify to be copied by default. You’ll have to select these ‘monthly’ jobs manually and move them to be copied.

This can be dangerous because if you forget to select the job to be copied and it ages out from the primary, you’ve lost it.

You also will need manage the ‘aging process’ on tape manually (as in, they will need to be selected to be deleted) as they will not do so automatically (they have no dependency on cycles), which means your tapes might get over used if you forget to remove them once they should qualify for aging.

Alternatively, you could setup a SYNCHRONOUS copy and do the reverse (instead of manually selecting jobs to be copied, you’ll be selecting all jobs EXCEPT those that are the monthly FULLs to be copied.

This will prevent a situation where jobs are prematurely aged from the primary copy before you’ve had a chance to copy them to secondary (as they’ll have a dependency on being copied...).

Please also noter we have a CMR in place to provide the ability you’re after (so it won’t be as manual) however it’s still being built. For your reference the CMR# is #256668.

Hi Chris,

If there is no Full or Synth Full, how my data will be aged/purge to meet the cycles?

I need the Monthly Full to be keep for 7 years. If I do synch copy, then I’ll need to keep all mailbox backup for 7 years. If 1 of the tape corrupted, do I still be able to restore the user mailbox?

@Fauzi SDS , have you considered a Cloud Sync copy?  It’s technically offsite and the chances of corruption are practically nil.

Also worth considering Metallic Cloud Storage Service:

Same idea….keep it offsite, it’s air gapped, and no need to worry about regular fulls.

@Fauzi SDS  Correct aged/cycles do not apply to mailbox. It's all message based. Yes, you would need to keep the incremental backups to have full retention of all mailbox items.

Hi @Scott Reynolds ,

The mailbox retention will be based on the retention at the O365 plan is it? It will not based on the Storage Plan? Or Storage Plan retention will also be based on O365 Plan regardless what retention you set at the Storage Plan?

How I want to purge data inside Storage Plan then? Later my disk backup storage will be full.

For cloud sync or metallic, this will incur cost right, we need to plan for this. Currently we only backup on-prem and use disk and tape as backup storage.

Hi Chris,

Does this also apply to ExchangeOnline backups?
I have a similar challenge where I am asked to do a new full as they do not trust there previous backups.

That’s correct, @Danny .  Exchange Online/O365 applies here.
