SmtpMailCache inbox growing

So we are using smtp journaling and the location we are journaling to continues to grow in space. I am not sure why. I have run full back up jobs on the content store mailbox, i have ran cleanup against it as well. When clean up runs it only clears out the recent emails that came. However the path smtpmailcache\mailboxes\inbox have about 140GB of mail items. Am i able to remove all those messages? My retention on that mailbox is 1 day however i have 153 folders and growing in that inbox location. Any advice would be apricated.

Hi @AverageUser 

Mind confirming what feature release / maintenance release your environment is on? 

The messages/folders that are not clearing, what is the oldest folder (date modified)?

Would also be good to check out CVMailSMTPCleanup.log to see if any errors or skipping is occuring, feel free to share this log from the access node (you’ll want to cleanup any server names / ips etc before sharing it here).

Sorry for the delay here is the output from the cvmailsmtpcleanup.log, it says skip sub-folder inbox from job. I can’t figure out why that is happening

Np @Chris Hollis  i didn’t even see the community email message. i just did a search to find it and it was put into our spam quarantine system. We are running 11.20.40, and we don’t have a maintenance agreement anymore so we can’t upgrade. I have debugging all the way up and it doesn’t give any additional detail about why it is skipping those folders. i even tried to assign the folders to get picked up and ran a full and it still skipped it. I have tried to remove the db file so it creates a new one. I have tried to move the contents out of the inbox folder using explorer then removed the db file then start the job again and it still skips that folder. at this point its just growing until we purchase a MA or pay for a support case.

I have just created a new journal mailbox since we do have a hybrid in case that was causing the issue with both on prem and o365 writing to the mailbox. That does not seem to matter even with them separated out they still say skipping inbox. I don’t know what else to try at this point.

@AverageUser , you can usually open a support case as long as you let the renewals team know you are looking to renew in good faith.

Dear CV, we have the same problem here.

Can you explain how to delete the SmtpMailCache  or config the maximum usage.
