Hi,
I updated the Commserve from release 11.16 to 11.20, now I should update the mediaagents and clients in production, my questions are:- I can do the hot update while the backups are in progress- if the update fails, can I rollback or does the client still remain in 11.16?

No. Doing updates while the backups are running is a bad idea. If the update fails the state it is left in is determined by why it failed.
my personal experience is that failures are extremely rare.
that said when there are failures you can roll back to the initially installed version. Then you can reapply whatever service pack you choose.

You can always use the ‘repair’ option on a failure. As to if the client will remain on 11.16 - it depends where the failure was, but generally it can rollback automatically if an update fails to install.
