Hi,

We are planning to upgrade our commvault software version 11.20.46 to the latest 11.26.x (If still supported). Below are our inquiry.

  1. If our active Capacity license can cover to perform or assist us on the upgrade by the help of CV Support team?
  2. Under Commcell Environment Upgrades documentation, we can see a lot of information's about the upgrade and procedures. Being new to this backup software this cause confusion. Is there a way to provide a specific upgrade procedure base from our current setup/environment including compute requirements? (see our current Commcell environment below)
  3. Other component that need to upgrade and procedure as well

Our Commcell Environment:

  • Commvault software version 11.20.46
  • Target version is 11.20.26
  • we have a CVFailover in our CommCell environment.
  • Mixed hypervisor VMware, RHOSP, RHV to backup virtual machine
  • Backup of Client application Oracle, Oracle RAC, MSSQL, MySQL, Kubernetes

Let me know if I missed some info that is important to the upgrade. Appreciate the help.

Regards,

ras

Hi @r0lansaad

Regarding version upgrade support from 11.20 to 11.26:

Source: https://documentation.commvault.com/11.26/expert/2621_planning_feature_release_installations_01.html

Quote: “If the CommServe server is at SP13 or a previous service pack, and you want to update it to Feature Release 11.28 or later, you must first update it to Feature Release 11.24 or Feature Release 11.26.”

Conclusion: You are above SP13 so your fine to upgrade to 11.26 :)

  1. If you have an active maintenance contract you can get support for the upgrade, not sure but looking at the nature of the activity this might be placed under Professional Services which will be billable.
You will have to check this with support or maybe forum moderators will know if this is covered in the maintenance contract.

Also if you have a partner between you and Commvault, they can help as well.
Depending on your contract with them this will be billable or not.

  2. The procedure is fairly straight forward assuming you have internet access with the Commserve.

In the Java Gui disable all backup activity, not a requirement but best to stop all activity to ensure no resources are in use.

If you are running the Commserve on a VM you can make a VM snapshot within the hypervisor. This will allow you to revert the VM back in the original state if something goes wrong.

Make a DR backup and save it on a location you can reach. You should have a local or share location defined within Home ribbon/tab → Control Panel → DR Backup → Export Settings. If for some reason this option is not defined or the location is not working, you can find the latest DR backup at <Install location>\Commvault\ContentStore\CommserveDR
Make a copy to a location you can reach before upgrading.
This DR backup will allow you to revert back to the DB status before the upgrade.
DR backup can be initiated manually via Right Click on Commserve in CommCell Browser → All Tasks → Click on Disaster Recovery Backup → Click OK with default settings

In the Java Gui go to Tools ribbon/tab → Click Add/Remove Software → click Download Software - Select Feature Release option, select the version for both feature release and and maintenance release → If you have multiple OS click advanced and select all OS you have, Click OK until windows closes.

Wait for the download job to complete.

Update the Commserve LiveSync setup according to this procedure for 11.20:

    https://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11_sp20/article?p=104875.htm

    Update other components.

    General update procedure:
In the Java Gui go to Tools ribbon/tab → Click Add/Remove Software → click Update Software - Select the servers you want to update → Click OK. (follow list below this procedure for update order)

Wait for the upgrade jobs to complete.

Check all functionalities including Commserve fail-over.
In some tests I had to reconfigure the Commserve LiveSync setup after an update from an older FR to a current FR. A lot has changed under the hood since 11.20, for the better btw :)

Enable all activities which you disabled before the update

  3. Components and order:
    1. Primary Commserve
    2. Fail-Over Commserve
    3. Update Media Agents
    4. Update other Commvault infrastructure components, such as index server, webserver, gateway proxies and so on
    5. Update clients with agents (back-up sources

If you have questions let me know :)

Hi @Jos Meijer

Just in a moment of absorption of what you have provided. So far so good and I am planning to test this in our test environment to gain more confident.

By the way appreciate so much your time to enlighten me on the procedure. Thanks a lot!  :)
