HyperScale X performance went time come to auxcopy to tape ?

Hi guys,  I'm having a customer who is actually using Standard MA with Commvault to back up to copy 1 to disk (PureFlash with NVMe Drives), copy 2 (and other PureFlash) and a copy 3 to Tape around 350 TB per week to send to tapes (LTO7) 4 tape drives (weekly Full) at a sustain throughput of 700 GB/Hour per drive (4 drive in parallel). We are looking to replace both MA with two HyperScaleX clusters.  The questions are ! How we need to configure the HyperScaleX (reference architecture) to sustain the weekly tape creation of 350 TB per week with the same throughput knowing that we are going to use NearLine SAS in the HyperscaleX Cluster !  Or ca we use SSD for the Storage Pool drive in a HyperScaleX.

Adding nodes to existing HyperScale X

Hi, I’m trying to add 3 nodes to an existing Hyperscale X cluster ?It’s a brand new installation, the cluster is up and running in with the first 3 nodes.Now I’m trying to add 3 more nodes, do I need to create a block with “cvavahi.py...” on those 3 new nodes as well and after that I will have the options in the Command Center to add them all under the one already there  or ?Thank you, it’s the first time I’m adding nodes to and existing HyperScale X cluster and I don't find any documentation on this !

HyperScale Reference Architecture 1.5 and X

Hi All,Two years before we implemented the Commvault HyperScale 1.5 Refernce Architecture on top of HPE 4200 Hardware.  Our CS running on VM with 11.19 and MA configured in HyperScale 6 Node with RHEL 7.7  I am planing to upgrade the OS and CV version. When I browse the documentation page, I came across one more product terminaloy HyperScale X.I couldn’t figureout following factors, and looking a advice who is working in similar setup.What is techinical  difference between Hyperscale refernce architecture X and 1.5? Any use cases where I need a situation to move from 1.5 to X? Can I upgrade HyperScale 1.5 to X in the same Hardware without distrub data? Can you upgrade the OS and CV version in the same 1.5 without jumping into X ?Your assistance would be appriciated.  Thanks,Mani

Hyperscale-X node deployment: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Hi,I’m trying to setup my first HS-X node on an HPE Apollo 4200 server. The server has 2 SSDs for OS, I created a hardware RAID 1 with them. 2 SSDs for metadata and 24 Disks for data. I downloaded HS-X media ISO 2.2 from 2021-08 (seems to be the latest one)First, I’m not able to use “Multi Node” Option in first install screen, I guess that is because networking is not configured yet.I then go through the config, select all the disks depending on their purpose and start the installation. After reaching 100% it shows that installation failed and “cannot set terminal process group (-1): Inappropriate ioctl for device”. I see that esp, boot and lvm partition were created on /dev/sdc (RAID 1), I also see that lvm logical disks were created on sdc and OS was installed.If I reboot the installer ISO it tells me that an existing HS-X installation is detected. But when I try to boot from the OS RAID 1 device, it does not boot. So I guess that the grub bootmanger was not installed correctly and t

Rocky Linux release 8.9 End of Life

Hello Everybody, During a meeting with customer where two new HSX clusters were deployed they highlighted the fact that Rocky Linux release 8.9 was out of support.Rocky Linux Release and Version Guide - Rocky Linux Wiki  Do we have any plans in future to allow the update of this OS to a higher version or this is something customer should not be worried about?Thanks in advance

HyperScale-X: Mgmt and Data-Protection network traffic separation

We have the requirement in our company that all Mgmt interfaces/IP’s must be protected by a firewall. For HSX this includes the IP where sshd, http Admin GUI is running. But this seems not to be possible in our setup.We can not protect the DP network with firewall as there will also be backup traffic. So we decided to used 2 different VLAN’s on one of the two LACP channels.Overall we have 3 VLANs/networks configured on 2 LACP channels. 2 VLANs are configured on a trunk.Storage-Pool: not routed - no problem - on LACP 1 with 2 x 25G Data-Protection: should be used for communication with other Commvault servers and clients to back up - on LACP 2 with 2 x 25G Mgmt: used for sshd / http - on LACP 2 with 2 x 25G But according to documentation for Reference Architecture only one network can be routable. In our case both Mgmt and DP must be routable. I added some Linux policy routing rules and they worked perfectly fine until the GUI installer was started (via browser after basic network confi

HSX OS upgrade from 7.9 to 8.9 with sp32

we are trying to do OS upgrade the HSX from the existing 7.9 to 8.9 to be able to add additional new nodes (HSX ISO 3.2312) we tried to upgrade the OS using the Command center and CLI both showing upgrade completes successfully however the OS version is still 7.9 i used the below reference for the OS upgrade operation. https://documentation.commvault.com/2024/expert/installing_operating_system_updates_on_hyperscale_x_reference_architecture.html

HyperScale X (Reference Architecture) not hardened by default?

Hi! We recently deployed 2 HyperScale X Reference Architecture clusters at a customer, and found out that: Ransomware Protection is not enabled by default Linux Firewall is not enabled by default In my opinion, in current times, it is strange that by default the solution is so insecure.Why are the firewall and ransomware protection not enabled by default? And will that be addressed in a future release?

HyperScale X and VSA backups using SAN transport mode

Hello all, I'd like to understand the steps taken by Commvault when a VSA backup from a vSphere environment uses a HSX block as access nodes/proxy.  Consider that vSphere datastores are FC SAN based LUNs. So, best performance would be to use SAN transport mode on the cvlt side. During the backup operation, how the datastore LUNs are presented to the appliance? I saw in the docs the following: "For Linux proxies, you might need to rescan the SCSI or iSCSI bus after attaching devices.For MediaAgents on the HyperScale 1.5 Appliance or HyperScale X Appliance, you can use the rescan-scsi-bus.sh script to force a rescan." So, that rescan procedure, when it is required? Everytime a new datastore is presented to the virtual environment? If there's no new datastore, it is done only once during HSX deployment? Regards,Pedro

Fresh Imaging Hyperscale X Reference Architecture 3 Nodes

Hello, i have a project that a client will deploy HSX RA on Hpe proLient DL360 in the environment. i have never implemented HSX Before.and i have checked the documentation for  the RA installation and network configuration. https://documentation.commvault.com/v11/essential/154258_setting_up_installation_media_for_hyperscale_x_reference_architecture.htmlmy question is is there’s a guild explains step by step the installation starting from configuring the servers, and the HSX imaging ?my blind step is how the image will be installed?dhcp is not enabled.documentation says that u’ll use a windows machine that can connect to the nodes and download the iso from the store then mount the image and start the installation.1 - do i need to mount the iso on each node from the ILO ?2- how the nodes can communicate during the installation as when you start configuring the first node it searchs for the other nodes.

HyperScale X manual cleanup ?

Hi, I just start a new config on three nodes for HyperScale X.I was in the cluster creation of the Commander Center and during the creation it fails because one of the nodes (3) was not ready !I’ve tried to delete the HyperScale X Cluster from the command center, it disappeared OK.But now when I try to create a new cluster I’m only seeing the node 3 (the one that was not ready in the first creation !)Is there any command line that I can run to cleanup the fail install on node 1 and 2 ! or it’s going to be faster to re image the two nodes !

Monitoring Hyperscale by SNMP

Hi EveryoneOne of my customers is looking for a way to monitor the hardware of an Hyperscale X by SNMP. I looked for the documentation in manufacturer's web and also in the community without success. HyperScale X Hedvig OS update

Hi,I’m trying to update the OS for my Hyperscale X; however, in the documentation they stated that we should use KVM console instead of using SSH. I opened the KVM console on 1 of my nodes, and I can’t find the log in option. I wonder which button I need to press or which command I need to put there in order to log in?

Commvault Hyperscale X Reference Architecture licensing

Hi! Just want to ask how the reference architecture for hyperscale X would be licensed. After acquiring a per node license, do we still need to purchase Backup and Recovery or Disaster Recovery licenses to enjoy backup and DR? Would appreciate any input on this. Thank you!

HyperScale X on air-gapped environment

Hi There.I am searching for technical resources on how we setup an air-gapped environment.The idea is to have an isolated HSX cluster that we air-gap from the production HSX cluster and used only for Aux Copies long retention.I checked the online documentation and the internet on how CV achieve this with no luck. I want to use a VM as a network gateway proxy with blackout window and network topology. I just didn't find how we can automatically shutdown and power up the VM to isolate the air-gapped environment.Searched for workflow but couldn’t find anything relevant.Anyone did this before and if so how was it done ?ThanksAbdel

Data Domain BoostFS with HyperScale X?

Is it possible to install the BoostFS library on a HyperScale X Media Agent, and if so is it supported?I’m looking to write a additional backup copy to storage outside of the appliance and hope I can do it in a deduplicated manner rather than having to send a full copy to the data domain.  The topic of BoostFS is discussed on https://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11/article?p=9404.htm#o132281, but nothing specific to HyperScale X and BoostFS at https://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11/article?p=128105.htm.Thanks

Node limit for Hyperscale X Nodes

Hello All,I am planning for the expansion of one of our Hyperscale X clusters on Dell Reference Architecture. I have 2 questions that I would love some input on.  -Node LimitOne of my contacts told me that there is a 12-node limit on storage pools (HCX clusters). Then after the 12th node is deployed, we should plan to make a new storage pool. I found that odd because my last contact told me that there was no limit on the number of nodes. The only limit I have heard of is the 5PB capacity that CommVault has tested internally.The no limit is documented here:Storage Pool Expansion and Capacity Planning For HyperScale X Appliance (commvault.com) The only mention of a 12 node limit I could find online is that we can only deploy 12 nodes at a time in the initial configuration. Hyperscale X Ref. Architecture - Failed to validate cluster

So this is deployment 3 of 3 this week. And the first two have gone flawless. Pointed out some notes and documentation errors to the Commvault staff as well. However, this 3rd one is giving me grief. I am receiving a Failed to validate cluster please check the cvmanager.log for details.Ok, So - Note that all three nodes are green with Checks for status. So those are fineThe logs - this is where it gets weird. I have checked all three nodes /opt/commvault/logs/cvmanager.log - is blank. Theres nothing is there. I even tried to tailf the log file during the install and it just sits . So there is nothign being written to the logs.Now what? Well i burned like 4 hours trying to solve this so i just blew them away- reimaged all 3 nodes and started over. Here I am- Same things with fresh installs. I checked NTP and date/time is all gtg as well. What else should I be checking? Network is all working- I can hit all IP’s and ssh , iscsi etc is GTG.  Ready? Go!

Monitoring software (Zabbix) integration with HyperScale X nodes

Customer having monitoring tool called Zabbix and using the same for Alerts and Monitoring on all their IT devices. So they want to include commvault Infra servers (CS, MA) and Hyperscale X in Zabbix monitoring and Zabbix agent needs to be installed on local system for the same.Is Zabbix agent can be installed on HyperScale nodes? Is there any document available from Commvault end for the same?

HSX: failed disk was not correctly replaced

We seem to run into multiple problems in our new HSX environment. Metadata disk d2 silently filled 100% on one of three nodes, data disks are all 90-95%, but in GUI only 550 of 720TB are shown as used. Not a single alert for this, all green in GUI. An then there is disk d22 / sdv on one node that failed a few weeks ago and was replaced together with support. Hyperscale X Reference Architecture VLAN

Hi, Concerning deploying the node of Hyperscale X Reference Architecture, is it possible to confgure Network Bonding for DPN and SPN to define multiple VLAN-tagged interfaces on a single 802.3ad trunk? Also, is it possible to use NetworkManager/nmtui? Thank you very much!
