We currently use IBM V5000 arrays for our Commvault backup target to land our deduped backups. We are starting to review other options to see what other fast, cost effective options are out there. I do prefer to use Fiber Channel connections, but open to options. Since Commvault is really the brain in our scenario, the storage array does not really need any features, just good speed. What Vendor Storage arrays do you use? Are you happy with it?
CVVD.SYS driver may cause reboot when using Live Browse or Block Level restore using Virtual Server Agent
An edge condition was found when performing a file-level restore of a virtual machine using the Virtual Server Agent, the Access or Proxy Node may reboot due to the CVVD.sys driver that loads the backup data for browsing. The following versions are affected:FeatureRelease 22.42 to 22.49 FeatureRelease 23.29 to 23.34 FeatureRelease 24.15 to 24.20 FeatureRelease 25.0 to 25.2Some common symptoms are the CVD log will flood with NULL values and the following error will be reported for the browse on the media agent.Failed to receive browse response from MediaAgent. Please check Browse.log on MediaAgent. The Browse log on the media agent and\or access node (VSA Proxy) may indicate the following:CCvNetwork::CheckIfDataAvailable() - Thread is waiting for data on a socket. Waited for 600 sec(s). Requested wait time = no time out. Connection details : The CVVD challenge is addressed with the latest maintenance releases when applied to the Virtual Server Proxy or Access Node. These can be downloaded
Hello teamMy Commvault is 11.20. In one of my storage policy I observed following problem. Index full backup jobs seems not to be aged. As far as I know system keeps only a few copies of full index backup. Schedule and cleanup rules are default. Retentions for this storage policy is no more than 1 month.I see almost 40 jobs of full index backup from January this year until now. Every job has a copy on disk and a tape on storage policy. Data retention forecast report says aging of these jobs are according to index rule. Backups are small but it is annoying because old single copy of job takes full LTO8.What is the cause of this behaviour ?Is there any problem with index cache ?How can I check it ?Can I manually delete old index backup jobs ?Thanks for any advice.Regards,
Hello everyone, i’ve got a question to the backup from Microsoft 365 Exchange Online. Why can we backup the mailboxes only as “forever incremental”? Doesn’t it makes sense to be able to do a Synth Full from time to time?I see why we can’t make a full backup over the internet. That makes totally sense to me.The synthetic full however is performed directly on the Commserve and not over the internet.Thats why i don’t understand that we are only able to do a forever incremental. We already asked that our consultat, but he didn’t had an anwser either. So maybe someone of you now the reasons for that. Thanks,Kilian
Hi everyone,We are currently deploying a Commvault environment to protect via VSA a great amount of VMs (almost 6000VMs)VSA proxies are Windows Server 2019 SE VMs that reside on the same cluster that VMs we would like to protect. So transport mode will be HOTADD.We are currently on test phase so as to obtain results and determine the number of VSAs Proxies that finally we will deploy. The environment is the following: Commvault version: v11.24.7 VCSA: VCenter 7.0u2 ESXi Version: 7.0uw VSA Proxies O.S: Windows Server 2019 SE VDDK version used on Backups: 7.0.1As per VMWare documentation says on VMWare 7.0u2 each PVSCSI card on the proxy VSA should be able to mount 64 vmdks of the Backed-up VMs.The issueis that we are monitoring during the backup and each proxy is just able to mount 15 disks via hotadd (stucked on the previous limitation of VSphere 6.5)We have added manually more than 20VMDK disk on the Virtual Machine so we understand that this is not a VMware issue. The limitation arise
Last week one of our customers asked us if Commvault was using Python as they were investigating the vulnerability CVE 2015-20107. I found through another community post that Metrics servers or CommServes with metrics package are using Python.Python 3 usage on CommserveAll versions of Python are currently vulnerable (up to latest release 3.10.4) so in-place patching of Python will no resolve this vulnerability in Python. Is Commvault vulnerable and what workarounds and/or mitigations are recommended?

Hello,we are running DB2 backup AIX LPAR. We have noted that CPU load is high“In virtualized environments (e.g.,LPAR, WPAR, Solaris Zones etc.,) where dedicated CPUs are not allocated, backup jobs may result in high CPU usage on production servers. The following measures can be taken to optimize the CPU usage”Best Practices - AIX File System (commvault.com) The steps were covered and additional registry keys to limit CPU load and core usage were set in place. Switching deduplication to MediaAgent didn’t provided sufficient change, almost no CPU consumption change was in place. Only jobs without deduplication consumes less CPU, but we cannot use them. At the end we can limit CPU load to 50-60% from up to 90%, but it impacts the backup duration few times. Playing with streams is not an option too since additional CPU consumption occurs. Since we are talking about Log backup mostly, Intellisnap won’t help much:Can I perform an IntelliSnap backup for log files? No. During an IntelliSnap bac
hi everyone, after regular snapshot backup the Commvault doesn't delete snapshots. As of this moment, the snapshot capacity is above 22Twe are not working with IntelliSnap or some solutions, our vSphere version is 6.7u3I would be happy for any help or suggestion.thank you!
In the following URL vSAN Support for the Virtual Server Agent with VMware (commvault.com), it is written “For Service Pack 11 and later, the Virtual Server Agent (VSA) provides support for streaming backups, IntelliSnap backups, and restores of virtual machines on VMware Virtual SAN (vSAN) datastores.”In the case of VMware vSAN, what is the difference between streaming & Intellisnap backups? Is the hotadd transport mode linked to Intellisnap backups and the NBD transport mode linked to streaming backups? Thanks & Regards
i am seeing the same type of errors and i am running 11.23.47. we use the same rman backup script across 60+ clients without an issue. only one client continues to get this error. however, it will run successfully sometimes. for example, yesterday it ran fine in the am but always fails during the backup window at 6pm. these are some of the errors logged: 3303:RMAN-03009: failure of backup command on ORA_SBT_TAPE_1 channel at 03/30/2022 18:03:023304:ORA-19506: failed to create sequential file, name="040pn4gb_4_1_1", parms=""3305:ORA-27028: skgfqcre: sbtbackup returned error3306:ORA-19511: non RMAN, but media manager or vendor specific failure, error text: Starting backup at 30-mar-2022 18:01:41released channel: ORA_DISK_1allocated channel: ORA_SBT_TAPE_1channel ORA_SBT_TAPE_1: SID=2613 device type=SBT_TAPEchannel ORA_SBT_TAPE_1: CommVault Systems for Oracle: Version 11.0.0(BUILD80)allocated channel: ORA_SBT_TAPE_2channel ORA_SBT_TAPE_2: SID=1340 device type=SBT_TAPEchannel ORA_SBT_TA
Hi! The exchange guys are in the process of setting up a new exchange cluster, so i am trying to add a new “Exchange DAG” client, but when i try to discover the servers an error pops up with “DAG Discover failed”. I’ve also tried using a proxy, but i get the same error. So, i guess the question is, which log-files should i try to dig into to try and locate where and what the problem with this is ?
Hello, is there a best practice guide if I want to separate a Commvault web server from the CommServe. I want to outsource the web server to its own VM. And another problem I would like to solve is the accessibility after a failover. We have a problem in our production environment that the web/admin console is not available after failover. In the production environment, the web server was disconnected from CommServe from the beginning. Kind RegardsThomas
Hello, I want to know if I'm going to remove 1 dns zone how can I restore it via AD, should I check DC=domainDnsZones or DC=ForestDnsZone? And then full dns zone be restored? For example I want to remove RestoremePlease ( see attachment), how can I restore it via AD restore
Hello everyone and thanks in advance for any hint.I’m running a Commvault V11Sp20 installation of the software and recently had a 6TB Oracle Database migrated from a stand-alone Oracle 12 DB to a three-node Oracle RAC 19 installation. Backups work properly and, “randomly” the three nodes are involved in backup jobs.Problem is: dedupe ratio is low. While the stand-alone data reached 95/97% of dedupe ratio, these backups for the Oracle RAC instances reach 40/65% of dedupe ratio. That is, a single Full backup takes something like 3TB of disk library (the very same disk library hosting the GDP previously used for storing the stand-alone Oracle DBs backups). Any hints about why the dedupe ratio is so low? Thanks in advance for your kind opinion. Regards
Hello, I want to performe VSA upgrade to V2. We using 2 Vcenters with V1 indexing. What are the steps i need to do before using workflow VSA V1> V2 Do i need to add new vcenter first and then use the workflow? And what about the usage of storage. Do i need to have the same amount free storage that used for one Vcenter backup
I am investigating a performance issue on a server that is both client and media agent.Looking in the PerformanceMetrics.log file I see the metrics for CPU load on some CV processes. But they seem always to be at zero.Isn’t those collected into the log file or does something need to be enabled for them to get there. I’ve attached a screenshot of that section from the log file
Version 11.24I was using a setup with open-replication SVM1 as source and auxcopy to SVM2 as the destination.I was working with a script to set NetApp snapshot snapmirror-label.I was using the Label “CVDaily”. After have getting this to work I noticed that the snapshots was starting to get a label “IntelliSnap”, which wasn’t there in the beginning. What is the procedure to have CV use this label for all NetApp Snapshots every time? There is no references in the current documentation so, it looks like a ‘hidden’ feature.Source:Source view. Notice 1 SP snapshot with my label and next 2 with IntelliSnap labelThe feature request for adding snapmirror-label is still open - but maybe there was a kind developer somewhere after all :)
