Does Commvault always need to create an AMI for virtual server backups in AWS?
If we turn off CBT, will the AMI be deleted after the virtual server backup completes?
If we turn off CBT, what are the pros and cons?
Are hotadd and EBS direct the only two available transport modes?
If there is a 3TB EC2 instance, how long will it take to create an AMI for the backup?

Thanks

Good afternoon. I will attempt to answer your questions inline:

  1.  Does Commvault always need to create an AMI for virtual server backups in AWS?

EBS snapshots are used for backups and are snaps from AMIs.  Most basic difference between AMIs and snapshots are the type of services they are associated with. Snapshots are associated with EBS while AMIs are associared with EC2 instances. Snapshots are the backup of the data on EBS volumes, whereas AMIs are bootable copy of the whole EC2 instances.

  1. If we turn off CBT, will the AMI be deleted after the virtual server backup completes?

No

  1. If we turn off CBT, what are the pros and cons?

Longer and larger backups is a con. There are no pros really.

  1. Are hotadd and EBS direct the only two available transport modes?

Yes

  1. If there is a 3TB EC2 instance, how long will it take to create an AMI for the backup?

This is solely dependent on the AWS side.  AWS support might be able to answer this for you.
