Splitting Workload of data backups to increase backup performance

We have two clients that we are backing up which are taking up a huge amount of time to back up. Commvault confirmed its not the backups but the data traffic that is causing extreme lengths in time to back up. My networking team cannot go any further to increase the throughput for data. Brought this issue to my management and suggested to have a normal backup happen to the client on a daily basis and with a weekly full but the difference is to only have the backups not backup anything 45 days or older. Then once a quarter do a full backup of everything (including all the 45 days and older)

This runs into an issue because I don't know how to setup another default subclient on the clients in order to generate a quarterly backup. I know normally this is all resolved if we have Commvault deduplication, but my companies motto is work harder not smarter and decided its to costly to have this option. Is there a way to get this results of:

daily/weekly/monthly backup with only data that is within 45 days of its backup

quarterly backup of all data

Hey Mike, I had  a ticket in as well in relations to this question which is what we were looking for. This file archiver is something i want to show to my management and see if they want to implement this at a later date. Thanks as always for your input.

Your best bet is going to be follow these steps to setup the subclient: https://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11/article?p=18450.htm
You are going to also want to create a new backup set: https://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11/article?p=18399.htm
This is where you are going to want to configure either your special subclient for the last 45 days or your monthly full subclient.
The reason why you need the new backupset is because windows file system content is mutually exclusive per backupset.

Have you looked at using File Archiver?

You can set up Archiving rules to meet the 45 day need, though the Fulls are all synthetic (so you’ll back up the files in completion anyway).

I’m not sure using multiple Backup Sets (to get multiple default subclients) will be a valid solution….I can easily foresee some sort of restore need where you need to pull files from various subclients to create a ‘whole' restore.
