restore from aged data located on S3

Good Morning,We need to restore data from S3 which is secondary copy with a retention of 90 days. Last backup was a year ago, so retention period is expired.Obviously, the jobs have been expired but if we check content on S3 we can see the data is still on it.However, if we check content from S3 library on CommCell the data on media is not available.Is it possible to restore this backups by anyway? Thx in advanced and Regards.

Using GUID partition table for DDB disk.

I have a media server that has poor performance and was reading about using IOmeter to troubleshoot.  It states to convert the disk to MBR if using GPT.  I am wondering if GPT could be the reason for poor performance or if needing MBR is just an IOmeter limitation.Thanks.

Data Aging Major Event Codes

Hello All,I’m a newbie, starting with CommVault and see these “Event Codes” on a Data Aging Job every day.Event ID 97531656 Event Code 13:6 (Exiting with errors - some files may not have been pruned) Event ID 9753162  Event Code 13:48 (Data is partially pruned due to database problem)As stated, I’m a newbie at this and don’t know if there is something I can do about this or should do about this.Any insight would be great.TIA, AlanKeno

3 primary copy pool in 1 secondary copy pool - is this possible??

I have 3 locations worldwide with different companies. I want to back up these locations with a secondary copy of the backups at the main location in a storage pool.  Is this possible with an auxiliary copy?or what is the best way to do this?

Set preferred Media Agent for Agent Backup

Hello,we have scenario that we have two Media Agent in an OnPrem Location for customer.ma01 is used for infrastructure Backup mainly VSA Backup etc.(direct connection to CS)ma02 shoud be used for Agent Backup (SQL ;SAP etc..) in Customer Network (direct connection to Clients / Connection to CS via Topology)ma01 with VSA Backup is working fine.ma02 if we select manually for Agent Backup also works fine, but for scheduled Jobs always ma01 is selected and not ma02.So we found following Additional setting:https://documentation.commvault.com/additionalsetting/details?name=PreferredMediaAgentGroup“ PreferredMediaAgentGroup“We activate this Additional Setting on both groups for MA and Agents with same value “ma02” but it does not work still ma01 is picked. Question: Has anybody used this setting or can explain what we do wrong the explanation in documentation is not that clear: https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/setting_up_client_and_mediaagent_pairing_for_data_protection_operat

Report of all SQL database restore points?

Hi, Was wondering if there’s a report I can use that will list server, database and all the restore points we have available. I know I can go into each database recovery in the portal and use the calendar but we have 5000+ databases so looking for the raw data if poss. Something like this would be great, if it exists.   Many thanks

First full backup copy is partially copied to secondary copy

First full backup copy is partially copied to secondary copy, DASH is enabled, tried to recopy those jobs but steams will pick up the job id’s after sometime we see the network errors. Please provide solution to fix it.Note : Auxiliary copy is running over internet link.

Need help Migrating encrypted tapes to EMC s3 storage

Hello We have Commvault Recovery environment . All our Tapes are encrypted using IBM SKLM . Now we are planning to migrate the Tape data to EMC s3 storage to eliminate tape.What is the steps to need to create a aux copy to migrate the tape data to s3 storage. How to eliminate the encryption which was enabled on the Tape while migrating through aux copy. Thanks,Sandy

Reattach datastore to a new server that contains stubs.

Hello,On our VMware infrastructure, a Windows 2012 file server contains five datastores (LUNs) and we want to distribute these LUNs to new file servers. From the vCenter, we planned to detach the LUNs and reattach them to the new server. However, on each of these LUNs, several TB of files were archived and stubs replaced the files. What should we do to ensure that nothing is lost during these manipulations?Thank you for your help.

Secondary Copy Cloud to Secondary Copy Cloud

HiI would like to execute a secondary copy from a S3 bucket to another secondary copy S3 bucket. I created and configured buckets and its working. But the issue is the mediaagent is in our local infraestructure and data travels a lot instead of going to bucket to bucket directly is any way to configure this ease or i need to put a MA in our AWS infraestructure instead of locally? Thanks!!Joan Mas

DDB Verification job failing

I rebooted two media agents in my environment and after that, I have DDB verification jobs failing. The error points to mount paths not accessible but all mount paths are online and ready. There are no network blocks. The connectivity between CV and the storage pool is up. The media agents can communicate with CommVault. Backup jobs are running with no issues. Only the DDB verification jobs are failing. The media agents involved are the ones I rebooted

Delete Storage Policy from Command Center

Hello, new install here, needed to make a change on a Cloud Storage (HPE StoreOnce), and needed to recreate the catalyst store. I’ve deleted everything, but now from command center (11.34) I says when recreating the CLOUD Storage is already created. the commvault documentation only refers to commcell operation, but this is strange because commcell is not available on 11.34 https://documentation.commvault.com/2024/expert/deleting_backup_or_archive_storage_policy.html ERRO: Failed to create the Storage Policy [NAME_OF_STORAGE_POLICY]. A Storage Policy with the same name already exists any help will be much appreciated regards

Wanting to make sure this is Accurate on Quarterly retentions and Data aging

Question: I asked Gemini ai the following question below and want to make sure that this is correct way of understanding the retention of a Quarterly retention and data aging. Inside of Commvault when you have storage policies with quarterly retentions, how does the data that is backed up under that policy affect the license? Since it happens once a quarter does Commvault hold on to the data being backed up under the storage policy that counts towards the license? In Commvault, when you have storage policies with quarterly retentions, the data backed up under that policy will count towards your license usage for the entire duration of the retention period. The right strategy when using HW deduplication and Object Storage

Hello, Please help me with the following question:Our primary copy will be stored in a backup appliance. Hardware deduplication will be used so we will disable Commvault’s deduplication for that copy.Our secondary copy will go to a object storage (on-premises). That storage can also deduplicate but the achievable reduction ratio is nowhere near what Commvault’s dedup can provide. So we would need to enable Commvault’s dedup for that copy.Isn’t it contradictory that CV’s dedup is disabled for primary but still needs to be enabled for secondary? what would be the right strategy for deduplication when having a backup appliance and a object storage in our backup environment? Would it be better just to use CV’s dedup and not take advantage of HW dedup? Thanks for the help!

HDFS / Hadoop as a disk library?

I have a customer who has excess Hadoop capacity that they would like to use for a long term storage target. I saw the below link on BOL that caught my attention as a possible solution, but I think this is just using commvault to orchestrate movement of data already in Hadoop to cold tiers within Hadoop, is that right? Restoring data from Secondary to Primary site when Clients cannot directly access secondary site

I have two sites, Primary and Secondary. Withe Auxcopy to the secondary site which is stores the only long term retention copies. We have firewalls in place so only the clients can only see the servers in the site they are in.This causes a problem when I am trying to restore long term retention data from the Secondary site to the primary site. We have a work around of Auxcopying data from Secondary to Primary site but would like a more elegant solution. I think there is a method where I can use a media agent in my Primary site to proxy my requests to the Secondary site to do these recoveries but cannot work out how. Any solutions appreciated.

Hi Team, From what I can see in the document, in the Commvault FR20 version, it is possible to discover NAS systems live and get a report. However, I think this feature is obsolete.
