Hello,
we have a problem with CommVault and the backup of our Exchange, which rather boils down to incorrect / incomplete backup configuration.

CommCell ID: 1012ff

Version: 11.22.36

We have Exchange 2016 (on premise) or the entire DAG for backup.
DAG consists of 4 Exchange servers based on Nutanix (AHV), in 2 clusters.

Current CV configuration:

2 DAG nodes per cluster, assigned to Data Protection EX-AD-CH2 and EX-AD-CH3:

When you try to restore, you can see that something has been bought back:

Only with this approach we backup the entire VMke in the form of a snapshot - this approach is not recommended by MS in the case of Exchange.
Additionally, the job ended with an error - it was not possible to mute the system files:

In addition, I added a new client - Exchange DAG - with an indication of our group:

At the same time, this one does not see nodes, so I bet that I have not set something up yet.

Backup configuration questions:
What is the correct approach to Exchange backup using CommVault in our case?

Exchange does not seem to support snapshots, or is not recommended:

„Some hypervisors include features for taking snapshots of virtual machines. Virtual machine snapshots capture the state of a virtual machine while it's running. This feature enables you to take multiple snapshots of a virtual machine and then revert the virtual machine to any of the previous states by applying a snapshot to the virtual machine. However, virtual machine snapshots aren't application aware, and using them can have unintended and unexpected consequences for a server application that maintains state data, such as Exchange. As a result, making virtual machine snapshots of an Exchange guest virtual machine isn't supported.”

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/Exchange/plan-and-deploy/virtualization?view=exchserver-2019

Please help with the correct configuration of the backup.

Hi @kszaf

Thank you for your post. The nodes of the DAG should be listed on the properties of the client under Advanced > Database Member Servers.

This is an example from within my lab:

In order to see the nodes or be able to discover them if they are not present there needs to be two main things done:

  1. The Commvault Exchange package needs to be installed on all member nodes in the DAG
  2. The “Host Name” of the Exchange client members need to be the FQDN

For example:

More details can be found in documentation on this:

https://documentation.commvault.com/11.24/expert/17022_creating_exchange_dag_client.html

Let me know if you have any other questions on this.

@kszaf

As for the question here:

Backup configuration questions:
What is the correct approach to Exchange backup using CommVault in our case?

Exchange does not seem to support snapshots, or is not recommended

This is related to snapshot of the VM itself. MS does not recommend relying on the VM snap to protect the Exchange data. You should be leveraging the Exchange database (DAG client in your screenshots) to protect the Exchange database data, truncate the logs, etc.

Were you able to confirm the nodes configured on the DAG properties → member servers?

@JamesA

For the last few days I tried to run a backup according to the instructions, but it crashes immediately on the installation of the Commvault Exchange package.
Unfortunately, I have no idea what could be wrong and I would need further help on this topic …

Below I show what I was doing and what the effect is:

Commcell -> Tools -> Add / Remove Software -> Install Software

For example, one of the target 4 Exchange servers has been added:

Selected Exchange Package:

The rest of the installation settings are standard.

Installation job ends with error:

The rest of the installation settings are standard.

Installation job ends with error:

It looks like I'm doing something wrong.
I would like to ask for help in this matter.

Thanks a lot,

Kinga

@kszaf

You can right click the failed push install job and do “View Logs”. This will show you what the install was doing and why it failed.

Another thing you can try is manually installing the Exchange package on the client using the Setup.exe. To do this you can simply access the Software Cache location on the CommServe from your Exchange client and run the Setup application to install the package interactively.

@kszaf

That looks like the PushInstall.log from the CommServe. That logs is telling me the packages reached the client but the client install failed on the client side.

Can you logon to CH2-EX-05.chespa.lan and in the Commvault\ContenStore\Log Files location can you check the Install.log for the error?

@JamesA

From the content I can see the message:
24848 4 11/16 15:04:06 3595 ### ### - Error: Another instance is already installed. Failed to create a new instance as allowMultipleInstances flag is not set.

You will probably have to try uninstalling / wiping everything on the host and trying again, but I prefer to wait for confirmation.

@kszaf

Thanks for the log line. This means you already have an instance installed.

If you check in the CommCell Console do you not see a client already named CH2-EX-05 in the list? If you do, then you can simply right click > All Tasks > Add/Remove Software > Install Software like so:

If you dont see the client, it might be a hidden virtual machine client. To show these types of clients, right click on Client Computers > Customize View

You can then enable “Virtual Machines” from the view list options:

Let me know if this helps..

@JamesA thanks for your time!

From the CommCell Console level, I cannot uninstall the software - there is no information that something was installed there.

On the CH2-EX-05 host itself, however, the 'Commvault ContentStore' was installed

I uninstalled the package from the operating system side, removed the remnants in C: \ Program Files \ Commvault

I tried to install the package again from CommCell - unsuccessful.

The end result is the same as the last one - from the CommCell side, the installation process has the 'failed' status, the Exchange node is not detected.

@kszaf

If you check the Install.log on the exchange node, what was the failed install reason?

Bit strange this one.. It looks like communication with CommServe had issues so client registration failed, but then install completed and it failed the job:

If you check on the client is the Commvault software installed and services started?

Do you see the client listed in the CommServe and can do a “Check Readiness” does that work?

It might be worth trying also to uninstall the Commvault software from the client, delete the Commvault folder afterwards. Then in the CommServe you could delete any clients you see of the same name. Just double check before you delete the client that there is no Virtual Machine backup jobs on that client you want to keep.

Thanks @JamesA

The software seems to be installed and running on the client:

The ‘Check Readiness’ report of 1 client – CH2-EX-05 – is also attached.
In CommCell it is listed as a ‘grey’ client:

The Exchange DAG also doesn’t discover any Exchange Server clients.

Should I proceed with uninstalling the software, removing the client and adding it again?

@kszaf

Looks like the client in the CommServe Console is not configured which is why it is grey.

Can you right click the client > All Tasks > Reconfigure

You should see the client then not be grey any more. Let me know if this works.

You dont need uninstall or reinstall anything.
