Hello Commvault community,

Ιn case it needs to be implemented GFS (Grandfather-Father-Son) for VMware / Azure VMs workloads, what is the preferred tier to use in Azure?

I assume that hot tier is ideal for daily backups (with 7-14 days retention), but what about  weekly backup jobs with 180 days+ retention ?

Can hot tier combined with cool tier or must create a new cool/cold container (with new DDB) for these weekly backup jobs? To split daily backups → hot tier and weekly backups -->cool / cold tier.

What is the best approach for this case?

Please for your feedback,
Nikos

Hi @Nikos.Kyrm

Hot tier is generally used as storage where frequent data read and write operations are performed.
However, you can configure weekly backup on cold storage with new DDB if required or else use existing global Dedupe engine.

Refer document for more details to understand concept of combined tier

Hello @Pradeep

Is possible to combine tier Hot/cool? Im not sure. I only see Hot/Archive and Cool/Archive in documentations.

So, that’s why I assume in case of GFS, needed 2 separately containers (with also separately DDB’s).

Dear @Pradeep

From Public Cloud Architecture Guide for Azure  I see that “Combined Storage Tiers” are not designed to be used as the Primary copy location”.

So, I assume that the only way to have weekly backups (GFS) in another tier (cool/cold) is through a new container and new DDB).
