What does “Unable/failed to quiesce the guest file system during snapshot creation” mean, and how do I resolve it on a VMware backup?

Looking for details, seeing errors during VMware backups specifically during snapshot creation. How can I address this?

Dear Commvault Communityi have a failed backup Job for vmware backup. here is for the error description Error Code 91:30 - Unable to open the disk(s) for Virtual Machine [VM]. Please ensure that the proxy is able to communicate with the ESX host and resolve the ESX host address. Also verify that the disks types configured to the virtual machine are supported. i`ve allready change all transport mode, from auto, san, nbd, sslnbd. but it still failed. anyone has solved this problem before? Thank you

ERROR CODE [91:139]: Unable to connect to virtual machine host

Recently updated credentials password and now getting intermittent backup job failures.  Failure reason: error code 91:139 Unable to connect to virtual machine host. Cannot complete login due to an incorrect user name or password.] Source: sdcvcsa01, Process: vsdiscovery ; I have verified the AD password and validated it again across the virtual machine credentials. Also, verified that m y AD password is not changing or account being locked out anywhere else.

CBT mode issue

I’m getting the error message when making a backup of a Windows VM “Failed to enable changed block tracking [Change tracking cannot be enabled when snapshots are present]”I cannot delete this old snapshot because I need this version of the VM. Do you know any way to make backups of the VM without snapshot so I can use here “Changed Block Tracking” again?

VSA proxy installation procedure

Hi all, my task is to deploy multiple VSA proxies. Since I do this for the first time I can not really imagine all caveats and pitfalls that can be hidden.The right procedure should be:install Windows or Linux machine (physical or virtual) install VSA module during Commvault package installation (also specify Commserve server during installation) be sure that required ports are open on the newly created VSA proxyThere is a cuple of questions what to do next:is it necessary to create any Vcenter permissions/roles (as per video https://kb.commvault.com/article/63239 )? how to enable using this newly created VSA proxy? Any contributions will be much appreciated!

HyperV backup did not delete/merge checkpoint disk after completion.

Hi,My customer having issue with hyperv backup. There is a lot of vm with left snapshot/checkpoint after backup completed. Hence there is a lot of avhdx disk cause the storage full.Microsoft said that backup should be doing the merge/delete after backup completed. From my understanding it should be hyperv do the merge/delete since it is hyperv checkpoint, Commvault only give instruction for hyperv to delete/merge it.Anyway that we can do backup without checkpoint?

Deleting server specific backups

What is the process to delete backup jobs for a specific server that were created by a VMware virtual server subclient?  In some cases I may want to manually age out some jobs.  Some of these jobs may be in cloud archive.  Will this free up storage?

 Getting Disk consolidation error & Unable to access file since it is locked Virtual disk file that is attached to virtual machine.

The virtual machine reports that it has virtual disks that need consolidation and this could not be performed automatically. In order to prevent a further buildup of delta disks and possible stability issues with the virtual machine, further backups of this virtual machine will not be performed until this condition is corrected.  Please check if there are any locks on the virtual disks or if the disks are still attached to a backup proxy. Unable to access file since it is locked Virtual disk file that is attached to virtual machine.

Best Practice How to Backup/Restore VMware vCenter VCSA Content Library (Emphasis: CONTENT LIBRARY)

What is Commvault's direction for correctly backing up vCenter Server Appliance [VCSA] and to include the Content Library metadata and library contents? The library contents are stored on a vSphere datastore and may include any type of file, including VM Templates Folders (containing .vmtx, .vmdk, .vmsn, .nvram files), .ova, .ovf, .iso, and other file types. So it would seem there needs to be a special backup subclient created to include all of the above contents (not just the Virtual Server Agent [VSA] default subclient).Perhaps VMware publishes the API and Commvault has a configured the VSA for this task? But I can't find any documentation in Commvault’s extenstive Expert documentation site.More background: Recently we had reason to backup and restore the vCenter 7.0 U2 VCSA (vCenter Server Appliance) during a new vSphere installation with Cisco and VMware support. re-register client agent with commserve

Hello,We are backing up VMWare VMs using image level backup. These VM have client file system iDA installed to backup NFS and RDM LUNs which are mapped to VMs.We have performed the restore of one of the VM in test environment with different name, to restore the files & folders into the RDM LUN we want to register the client agent with the Commserve with new hostname without re-installing the agent.Is there a way to achieve this?PS: We are not using IntelliSnap feature.

Commvault doesn't remove snapshots after backup.

hi everyone,after regular snapshot backup the Commvault doesn't delete snapshots.As of this moment, the snapshot capacity is above 22Twe are not working with IntelliSnap or some solutions, our vSphere version is 6.7u3I would be happy for any help or suggestion.thank you!

Which value to use from VMware Rvtools?

Hello,We need to foresee the backup capacity of VSA backups using hotadd transport mode. The VSA proxies are virtual machines and they send the data to physical media agents.We got the question from our customer: which value do you take into account to make your disk capacity calculations from the VMWare RVTools? When it planned to support Proxmox hypervisor for backup?

Reason for my question is Broadcom/vmware deal. Our Customers ask if Commvault supports ProxmoxDocumentation.commvaut.com 11.34 show that PROXMOX is not supported.Research in comunity shows a two year old topic where someone asked the same question.Two year are a long time so I want to ask if and when Commvault plans to support Proxmox?Thanks in advanceJoerg

Restore speed vmware

Hi All. I am having issues with restore speed when restoring a vmware server. When a restore is done where “vCenter Client”  is set to the vcenter, restore speeds are slow.When a restore is done where “vCenter Client” is set directly to the ESXI host and the vcenter is bypassed, we see a factor 4 in restore speeds. Anyone who can explain this behavior? I thought that the vcenter was only used for control data and not data movement. Regards-Anders

Options for Backing Up a Virtual Cluster with Shared Drives

We recently upgraded our Physical cluster to a Virtual Cluster.  In doing this we had to have the have the windows cluster with shared SCSI Bus for it to Failover.  We have no way to get around that.  CV does not back the VMs up with the following error.  “Virtual machine [Blah] is configured with shared virtual disks. Snapshot operations are not supported for shared disks. Use an in-guest agent to protect virtual machines with shared disks.”  I had opened a ticket with CV and they stated this is because the Snapshot can’t be created and recommended a Windows File System iDA.  My question is does anyone have any recommendations for a solution to get this cluster backed up, that is easy to restore onto our appliance in a Disaster situation?  I am guessing that would be an in-guest agent or the Windows File System iDA, but I honestly don’t know what that means or how to accomplish that.  Any suggestions would be great as we are hanging in the wind with these not getting backed up.  I wil

Transport Mode -> SAN

Hi,we use Commvault Simpana 11.20.36 and we have two Virtual Agents to backup our vSphere VMs.On the first enviroment the transport mode for VMWARE is set to auto.In the reports i can see that the transport mode for backup handles out SAN, the other enviroment only NBD.https://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11/article?p=32037.htmWhat can be the reason that the one environment does not save in san mode?Could it be a reason that in san zoning the esxi hosts of each cluster cannot see the media agent?RegardsDennis
