Hello,

I’m sure it’s not possible to restore from tape in a foreign Commcell without a DR Backup applied to the new Commcell but I’m not able get this information in Commvault documentation.

I’m sure I have already seen this information. Could you help me to find the link ?

Thanks in advance and best regards,

Gilles

Hi @Gilles SCHMIDT !

Thanks for your patience.

At the moment, this page has the best statement to what you are looking for:

https://documentation.commvault.com/11.24/expert/43586_retrieving_disaster_recovery_dr_backups_from_tape_storage_using_tape_catalog.html

I have created a Doc MR in your name to clarify that this is normally not possible for security reasons.

Let me know if that provides what you need :nerd:

@Gilles SCHMIDT understood, I was giving you the other side of the story (i.e. what to do IF you want to migrate that tape).

I’m not seeing this explicitly stated, though I can check with our docs team (and if there’s nothing, we can get it added).

I’ll respond back once I have more!

Hi Mike,

Thx for your reply.

It’s not related to a migration but just a tape cataloging, our customer wanted to restore data from tape to a foreign Commserve, I know it’s not possible without performing a recovery of Commserv DB (DR) . But I’m searching where I have seen this information in Commvault Documentation. I have to provide an evidence to my customer.

Best regards,

Gilles

Hi @Gilles SCHMIDT !

That’s correct, a tape ‘belongs’ to a CommCell and can’t be read by another.

In order to do so, you need to perform a CommCell Migration:

https://documentation.commvault.com/11.24/expert/5078_commcell_migration_overview.html

The use cases give more context on how you would have to perform a CCM to read the media elsewhere:
