Have you ever meticulously restored an Azure SQL database from a .bacpac file, checked the job status, and breathed a sigh of relief when you saw "Success," only to be met with a wave of authentication failures and reports of orphaned users? It's a confusing and frustrating scenario. The portal says the operation was successful, the database is online, but your SQL logins and contained users are completely broken. This isn't a random glitch or a failed job that was misreported. It's a common situation that stems from the fundamental design of how Azure SQL Database handles users and logins during a .bacpac import. This article will demystify this behavior, explaining why it happens, why it's not a bug, and how a different authentication method sidesteps the problem entirely.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------1. Takeaway 1: The "Successful" Restore That Secretly Breaks Your SQL LoginsThe core of the problem is this: even when an Azure SQL Dat
Hello Community ! I have environment 11.32 that I want to upgrade to 11.40 ,can I backup servers 2012R2 or 2012 or 2008R2 that have agent of 11.32 on 11.40 environment? Thanks.
Hi guys,I’m currently evaluating / planning the migration from a Windows CommServe to a Linux CommServe. We are using a Fujitsu ETERNUS CS8000 virtual tape library with VJUK (generic SCSI library) emulation as Tape backend. The Workflow (Prefetch Tapes for Restore) provided by Commvault to prefetch media, that have been migrated from cache, is no longer working on Linux CommServe. The Command ManualPrefetchTapes.exe, that is called by the workflow on Windows, cannot be found in the Linux distribution. Can someone tell me where to get it ?Or is there a newer version of the prefetch workflow available, that does no longer use the external command to initiate the prefetch ?Currently running on V11.40.59BRKlaus
Hi Commvault experts! Two things I'd like to have confirmed: Firstly, am I right that laptop backup plan is basically incremental forever? As far as I understand it, the client only ever sends changes and full backups are created as synthetic fulls on the storage side, so the endpoint never uploads a full backup overthe network. Is that correct? Secondly, I'm not clear on how retention works once a secondary copy is added. In the laptop plan you set deleted item retention and file versions, but the storage policy behind the plan has its own copies with their own retention settings. So which one actually applies - does the plan drive retention for both copies, or does the plan only cover the primary copy while the secondary copy is governed by the storage policy copy settings?Related: is the auxiliary copy schedule independent of the plan's RPO, or is it tied to it in some way? Thanks!
Hi there! In the retention settings for laptop plans you can set how long deleted items are kept, but what if there is a specific file that needs to be removed from the backups completely, so the retention rule doesn't apply to it at all?The use case could be a GDPR "right to be forgotten" request - the file is deleted from the laptop, but it also has to disappear from the backups.I found references to Erase Data by Browsing, but the documentation I came across is old and describes the CommCell Console. Is this available for laptop clients/plans, and where would I find it in Command Center? Does it need a separate license?Cheers!
I have a few questions regarding the documentation for testing IOPS for both the DDB disk (https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/commcell-console/testing_iops_of_deduplication_database_disk_on_windows.html) and the Disk Library (https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/commcell-console/testing_iops_for_disk_library_mount_path_with_iometer.html)The documentation states to run the IOMeter test “on the complete raw disk”, and “IOMeter allows allows physical disks to be selected only when there are no volumes on the disk”. Does this mean that the disk should not be formatted before running the IOMeter test? For the Disk Library, I am mounting a LUN from a SAN to the MediaAgent that is about 48 TB. What is the best way to test IOPS for this? I am guessing I will need to set the Maximum Disk Size, otherwise creating that huge iobw.tst file would take ages. Is the CVDiskPerf tool the preferred method testing Disk Library (like the above)? https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/commcel
Hi there! In a laptop plan I need to back up a specific folder that sits directly in the user profile, for example:C:\Users\<username>\ProjectsThe machines can have more than one user profile, and I want the folder backed up for each of them.I noticed the default content uses tokens like \%Desktop% and \%Documents%, so there is clearly a mechanism for resolving the user profile path. But those look like predefined tokens for known folders and I couldn't find one that would let me append my own subfolder, something like \%UserProfile%\Projects.Is there a token for this, or is a wildcard path like C:\Users\*\Projects the way to go? Or does the plan content have to be defined differently for this kind of case?Thank you in advance for your contributions!
Hi everyone,I’m looking for a tool or report that can perform a more comprehensive assessment of an existing CommCell environment.I’m already familiar with the Health Report, Security Assessment and Configuration Reports, but I’m looking for something more comprehensive that can assess the overall configuration and best practices of the environment in one place. For example, I’d like to assess things such as encryption configuration, Live Sync, security settings, storage and deduplication configuration, DR readiness, backup configuration, potential configuration issues, etc., and ideally get recommendations or findings for areas that should be reviewed or improved. Is there any Commvault tool, report, workflow or Store application that provides this kind of comprehensive CommCell assessment?Something similar in concept to VMware’s Health Analyzer would be exactly what I’m looking for. Any recommendations would be appreciated!Best regards,Nikos
Hi Commvault experts, we are setting up laptop (desktop/endpoint) backup for a customer. Users should be able to restore their own files, so I'm leaving the plan name out of the package to get the automatic owner assignment - is it right? Firstly, which way do you actually use to build the package - the Package Creator on Cloud Services website, or a custom package from the installation media? Package Creator wants an account and internet access and not every customer has that, so I'd rather do it locally, but I don't know if that's what people normally do. Secondly, in the Custom Package Options the laptop stuff (Launch Edge Monitor, Perform Registration using Authcode) only shows up if I tick "Create a de-coupled installation package". But the docs say de-coupled means the client doesn't register during install and has to be registered later, which sounds like the opposite of what I want. So is ticking de-coupled actually the correct way to build a laptop package using installation i
Hi All, we see every day an user login try from an old and deleted account. The login try is reported ans an information in the eventlog. Are tehere any options to get more informations about this login try ?
Hello,We are planning an operating system upgrade for a physical Commvault All-in-One server and would like to hear from anyone who has completed a similar upgrade.Current configuration:Physical Cisco UCS C240 M5 server Windows Server 2016 Standard Commvault 11.40.67 Non-clustered CommServe The same server hosts the CommServe, MediaAgent, Web Server/Command Center and Workflow Engine components Local DDBs and disk-library mount paths are also hosted on this server The customer does not want to split the CommServe and MediaAgent roles or migrate them to new hardwareThe planned target is an in-place upgrade directly from Windows Server 2016 to Windows Server 2025.Microsoft supports the direct upgrade path for a non-clustered server, and Commvault 11.40 supports Windows Server 2025. However, the exact procedure for an All-in-One server is not fully clear, especially because the same machine hosts both the CommServe and MediaAgent roles.I would appreciate feedback on the following:Has anyo
Hi All, i have an bad point… I know lic reporting is not easy. I had the following situation. We are using Commvault Backup and Recovery by capacity for vsa and database. We had an lic used growth from +4tb during the last 24 hours. Yesterday we had 49Tb from 50Tb used and today we are using 53Tb and of course the customer is know asking what happend here. For me its very dificult to find out what happend here. I checked the bigges vsa player from full to full if there is any increase but i found nothing also the biggest db server from full to full but also nothing. I send every 14 Day an lic zum report but there i only can see wich typ of application is using how much from the capacity lic So what can i do ?
Hi All, i have an problem with my nutanix ahv vsa backup. I git the message: Failed Virtual machine [xyz] was not found. Please verify that the virtual machine still exists and that the host is in the connected state. If the virtual machine does not exist remove it from the subclient. If the virtual machine does exist reselect the virtual machine and re-add it to the subclient content. When i do an browse i found ths maschines. Also under prism central the vms are up and running. I created an test subclient with this vms but doesnt help. Do you have an idear ?
GCP has the top organization and folders with projects underneath - view screenshot below. I know in vmware → vm groups → content rule it allows me to add folders. For GCP I do not have that option. Is this a simple additional setting that can be added to make it visible? How do I backup all projects within a specific folder for GCP Hypervisor? VMware view Thank you
In “normal Commvault Operations”, Should I have tapes in my tape library that have “Last Write Time” set as a date (not empty), and on them a write session (or a few), but the data on the tape is 0 bytes and no associated storage policy? For all storage policies/tape copies (except a few) we have “infinite” retention set on the tapes. For those that do not, retention is “years” (except the DR tape(s) . We do not re-use tapes.I have several (like 40 tapes) with “Last Write Time” set to a few days (or weeks… a few are months) ago, etc and all are0 bytes. Not all tapes in the system that are 0 Bytes have Last Write Time set. Using ‘tape → view contents” shows “no data” (as expected). The tapes show they have been mounted (“Number of mounts > 0) and there sems to be a file marker or 2 on them. So: I’m wondering how to tell “what its writing to them” and why or if “this is normal” as part of some internal 1 time “tape validation/initialization” job or something… but that doesn’t explai
Hello Commvault Community, Due to the fact that more and more environments are based on CommServe Linux, which by default has a built-in WebServer module, which in the case of Linux OS doesn’t support the O365 configuration, the WebServer module is increasingly being transferred to machines with Windows OS - this is a requirement for the O365 configuration. Commvault documentation specifies that the WebServer package should be installed on access nodes that will cover O365 configurations. If we have a pure Windows machine with no role in O365 or any other configuration in the Commvault environment, can such a server act as a dedicated O365 WebServer? If so, will Commvault automatically detect it? If not, where should I change it as the one responsible for connecting to Microsoft portals for the O365 configuration? Maybe some Additional Setting? Does an O365 WebServer necessarily have to be part of the configuration (located on an Access Node or IndexServer)? What if we have a scenar
(CV11.40.67 - self hosted)Has anyone found a "sweet spot" or a good ratio for the number of azure apps and streams for large exchange/Sharepoint jobs ?Before, adding more apps and streams at our large sharepoint and Exchange jobs improved the throughput. but I have read that Microsoft has become much stricter with throttling recently, also that using too many apps/streams might have the opposite effect and degrade the performance. When reviewing a recent sharepoint job, the tab where we can see throttling showed only 6 minutes of throttling. That seems like not so much, so I am not sure if Microsoft throttling is actually my bottleneck here.I tested the theory that fewer streams might perform better under the new Microsoft limits, I reduced the streams from 10 to 5. Unfortunately, this resulted in lower throughput. When I see only 6 minutes throttling time reported by CV, should I be looking elsewhere for the bottleneck rather than focusing on Microsoft throttling? When observing the acce
Hi everyone,At the moment, I am looking to clean-up our MSP environment. We have a lot of clients that are reported by our SLA as missed SLA and we have a lot of clients that show failed to run. Most of the clients show up for the file system backup as FS agent was pushed when another agent was also installed. We don't need the FS backup as we also protect the clients as VM but we still need the other agent to stay active as they protect things like AD, databases or cloud applications. Can I just retire the file system agent on these clients or will this uninstall the entire client? This is especially important when the clients are access nodes where backups are not tied directly to the client but to a pseudo client such as SQL AG or Office 365.I can also do this by releasing the license on the FS agent via the java console but this feels like the old way of doing things.Kind regards,Paul

all,I am configuring M365 mailbox backups.I have created an Office 365 Plan and set “Retain deleted items for 2555 days”I then created a Backup Plan with Primary to Disk for 365 days and synchronous AUX to Tape for 2555.Am I correct in saying that all mailbox backups from now with be Incremental and it ignores the Backup Plan retention and keeps all mail for 2555 days on Disk & Tape ! Also, is there a way to run a once off Full backup ? Currently on 11.36 Thanks
Team,I’m looking for some guidance on the best approach for redesigning our Commvault AWS cloud library.Current environment* Commvault version: 11.40* Primary AWS Region: us-east-1 (N. Virginia)* Current storage class: S3 Standard-IA* We have 2 AWS accounts configured for Commvault.* Across the accounts, we currently have 2 and 5 S3 buckets, mainly separated between Prod and Non-Prod.* Only a few Storage Policies currently have an Auxiliary Copy to an air-gapped location.* We already have DDBs associated with the existing cloud libraries.Planned designWe are planning to change the architecture to:Primary Copy* Region: us-east-1* S3 Storage Class: S3 Standard* Retention: 2–3 days* Intended for frequent restores and Commvault data-read operations.Secondary Copy* Region: us-east-2 (Ohio)* S3 Storage Class: S3 Standard-IA* Retention: up to 30 days* Intended as the secondary copy. The proposed flow is:Backup → S3 Standard (us-east-1) → Auxiliary Copy → S3 Standard-IA (us-east-2)Questions1. Hi, To make it easier for a user to check if he is affected by any CVE, it would be beneficial if we could go to https://documentation.commvault.com/securityadvisories/ and specify which patch version we are running, and see only the CVE’s that are affecting that given version. As it is now, I have to click into all the CVE’s and see if I am affected.
Hi everyone,Our CommServe is a VMware VM with 32 GB RAM, but lately memory utilization is consistently around 90% as the environment grows. We have multiple VMware, Azure, AWS, OCI, LiveSync and Microsoft 365 environments, although the total number of VMs is not particularly high.SQL Server Maximum Server Memory is already configured at ~16 GB, so SQL is not consuming all available memory. Would it be necessary to increase the CommServe all the way to 64 GB RAM, or would a lower intermediate value be sufficient to provide additional headroom?Since it is a VMware VM, we can increase RAM independently without necessarily increasing vCPU. CPU utilization is currently not a concern. What would you consider the best approach in this situation?Best regards,Nikos
Hi everyone.I am trying to build new small commvault lab with commserve on windows, plus one extra windows box with media agent and one same for linux media agent for VMware. Package which was provided to me is called FullMediaKit-Windows-40-CU60. During the installation I am selecting all-in-one and proceed further. Installer goes to client installation and want to put commserve or GW hostname. On the same machine Commserve should be installed during the same installation but when I put there localhost it is not proceeding further. What I am thinking, whether my mediakit have all needed software to install commserve and client at the same time.
