Hi,
i have 1 MediaAgent with B2D storage.
Is it necessary to backup this machine?

Good Day @Dennis,

From your description, it looks like you have two Media Agents, and one of them does not have a DDB Sub-Client created. You’re also asking whether backing up the Media Agent is considered best practice.

Yes, backing up Media Agents is recommended to support recovery in the event of hardware failure or a disaster. However, as shown in your screenshot, it’s not recommended to back them up using a standard file server-style backup, but - when a Storage Policy with deduplication enabled is associated with a Media Agent, the DDB is automatically protected as part of the deduplication configuration. This is the intended method.

Regarding the missing DDB Sub-Client on the second Media Agent, please verify whether it is associated with a Storage Policy that has deduplication enabled. Only in that case will the system create a DDB Sub-Client, and it will back up just the Deduplication Database, which is essential for any deduplication-enabled operations.

For more details, you can refer to the documentation here:
https://documentation.commvault.com/v11/commcell-console/deduplication_database_backup.html

Hope this clarifies things. Let us know if you have any additional questions!

I occasionally see people protecting the Commvault logs on the Media Agents. Not necessary to recover a failed MA, but helpful for TRs if you have high turnover on your MA logs and/or you want more details for an RCA if a MA crashes.

Thanks,
Scott
