Hello All,

I need a clarity on proxy client system requirements - IntelliSnap for oracle.

As per the documentation, Its mentioned the FS copy don't need oracle software to be installed in this case what should be the server compute resources

for RMAN copy - Its mentioned we need Oracle license as we will installing the oracle software along with our Oracle IDA and Media agent, in this case what should be the server compute resources.

Also when we say oracle software to be installed and the server will be used as proxy whether the proxy will auto create the instance on it during the backup copy or do we need to set up the dummy oracle instance same as source client on proxy? how does it work?

The IntelliSnap configuration is same for Oracle RAC as well?

Hi Ananth,

1). When performing a Backup copy using the File System method or using the RMAN for Backup copy, we usually recommend the Proxy server to be of the same size and specs as the actual production Oracle client, if possible. This requirement is due to the fact that when performing a backup copy using RMAN, we mount the Snapshots to the proxy and we startup the Oracle instance on the proxy to access and read the Oracle data on the mounted snapshots.

2). When performing a Backup copy using the File System approach, the proxy can be a bit undersized compared to the source as we don’t startup any Oracle instance to read the Data out of the snapshots.

Again, this varies if the underlying File System is ASM or Non-ASM.

We cannot use File System approach, if the Source database is running on a ASM file system.

3). With regards to the Oracle licensing on the Proxy, you may have check with Oracle if your environment needs any additonal licenses.

4). Yes, we do have to setup a dummy instance on the proxy with same Instance/Database name as the Source server.

The requirements are the same for Oracle RAC too. In this case, you need to setup the instance on the proxy with the same name as the actual RAC database running on the Source.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Regards,

Praveen

Hello @Praveen Bandaru ,

Thanks for the detailed answer.

Is there any performance improvement between the FS interface and RMAN interface?

how about volume copy, any additional considerations to be done?

Hi Ananth,

I do not expect there to be any performance difference between the File System and the RMAN copy approach. These operations take place on Proxy and as long as the Proxy is equipped well with good enough system resources, there should not be any issues with performance.

You can leverage using RMAN copy if you have enough Oracle licenses available in the environment and can take advantage of RMAN.

The Volume Copy option under Backup Copy needs to be only used in conjunction with RMAN Image Copy,

Below is the link on how to configure Oracle Subclients to use Image Copy followed by IntelliSnap.
