We are doing an Active Directory backup on a daily schedule.

Though all objects seem to show up in a restore window with the latest timestamp, the Microsoft tool

>repadmin.exe /showbackup

shows old timestamps, as if there has never ran an AD backup.

Has anyone else encountered this discrepancy? Is this by design or a misconfiguration on our side?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi @chelydridae , thankjs for the post!

I found a few cases with the exact same question.  Here’s the best written explanation I found:

Informed customer that the Active Directory agent is an object-level backup, which does not backup the AD database itself, so it won't update its backup time.

Only a System State backup will backup the AD database, so the best option is to use the File System agent to backup the domain controller, and not a Virtual Server Agent backup, as this is recommended by Microsoft.

Let me know if that explains everything!

Hi Mike

Indeed we do no File Backup on the Domain Controllers - for there are none … (I thought)

I will give it a try and see what happens.

thx

Keep me posted!

Configured a File Backup including System State - and repadmin shows the actual backup time now.

Glad to hear it!
