can we schedule separate backup for application only which is part of app aware backup ,

 

like , vsa with app aware - once in a day and application every two hours

No, the application is protected via the VM, so management of the data is always from the VSA VM and not the agent. 

Out or curiosity, what application requires backup every 2 hours?


For various agents that are configured with AppAware, we automatically create a schedule to trigger backups (such as SQL T-LOGS).

Log Truncation

For Microsoft SQL Server, an automatic log backup schedule is created automatically after you run an application-aware backup successfully for the first time.

If you needed to, you could modify this automatic schedule to run a transaction log based backup more frequently if necessary.

@Chris Hollis  thank you , is there any process do i need to follow if  i want to do vm and app backup separately for the VM’s app aware is selected, other than changing the app aware backup option from the backup method  .

 

@Chris Hollis  for sql , db and logs will be using same storage policy right  ,will the extended retention also get applied for logs ?

Query 1: Disable AppAware on the VSA Subclent and then disable IntelliSnap on the application client subclient. configure your subclients content/policies and schedules for both indepdently/as required.

This additional setting can be used in cases where the user wants to associate transaction log backups with a storage policy of their choice.


So you can define a separate policy for your logs, just not the ‘data’ (database) portion of SQL. 

Yes, extended retention configured for the policies defined will be applied (so if you had the VM subclient storage policy and T-LOG policies writing to the same policy, the extended retention would apply to both the VM backups and the SQL log backups). Note however that LOG backups have their own configuration paremeters (as logs are tied to a data job, if that data job has extended retention, the logs will be retained as they are required_by_job).
