Hello all,

Is there a log file on the backed up client (Windows OS) that shows all (successfully) backed up files from a File System Backup?

As you can view all the successfully backed up files from within Commvault the information must be there somewhere - I presume in the CommServe DB itself - but is that also logged somewhere in a log file on the client?

Background:

An application on that Client is creating many files on a daily basis that need to be backed up but afterwards (after 24h) are no longer needed on the client. Unfortunately, the application does not cleanup these “old” files, meaning they remain on the File System unless they are manually deleted. Due to the large size of these files (couple of GB per File) we ideally don’t want to just extend the File System but instead would prefer to run a script that runs deletes these files 1-2x per day. But to do that we somehow need to establish a logical verification that the files have been previously backed up, which is where such log file crawling might be the solution to that problem. Any inputs or recommendations are welcome.

Cheers,

Good morning.  We do not have a log file that by default lists the successfully backed up files.  You can get that information by right clicking on the job in the backup history.  You can raise the debug level of clbackup to make the log more verbose.  This should provide more information.

Hi @ChrisK

Why not use archiving solution with “delete the file” post archiving rule?

https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/25799_windows_file_system_archiving.html

You can have a backupset which will backup all the cumulative data, and an archive set which will archive only the data which meets archiving rules and delete the file.

For instance, if the modified / access / creation time of file is greater than 1 day, archive the data and delete it automatically once archived. We have lot of sanitations in place, which makes sure that file is archived successfully and present in index, before deleting it.

Thanks,

Sparsh

@SparshGupta that’s a good idea with the archiving, didn’t think of that. Do you know if that requires a separate license or if it would be covered under the VM license? (the systems we want to do that on are virtual and already backed up as a VM)

@ChrisK - Someone from licensing or support team might be able to help. Unfortunately, I am not aware of the same.
