Good evening folks

We currently use Commvault to backup our Exchange Online (EXO) environment and I have recently been reviewing Commvault DR options and have become a bit stuck for EXO.

The components involved for EXO backups I believe are …

-Access Node

-Index Server

-Web Server

The access node and index server I understand why their needed but I am at a bit of a loss as what role the web server plays. If I change the web server under properties of the access node to another web server the restores fail so clearly the websites play a crucial role. I have read the CV documentation but am still no further forward - I can see that there is some sort of search svc installed.

Any clarify that can be provided would be much appreciated.

hello @KevinDodd
good day ,

The web server hosts the CommCell admin/web console, playing a crucial role in enabling users to manage backups, perform restores, and monitor job statuses.

Additionally, it facilitates communication between access nodes, index servers, and other components, acting as a mediator to coordinate requests and responses.

The web server also includes a search service that supports index searching for restores, which is essential for quickly locating items during a restore operation.

I hope this helps! If you have any specific questions or scenarios you'd like to discuss, feel free to ask!

This link shows the components and how they interact.

The webserver performs the query to the indexserver to facilitate the browse and restore for Exch Mailbox.
