Hi,

We have two NetApp filers where we perform Snapmirror Volumes in a synchronous way. So, the data of the volumes for each SVM (Storage Virtual Machine) are replicated in a synchronous way to another SVM located in another NetApp Filer.

We want to configure NDMP backups using streaming mode.

Questions:

  • What are the best practices to configure such type of configuration? Do we need to configure a client at the SVM level or NetApp cluster level?
  • In case of SVM failover, can Commvault make a link between the two different SVMs which are different but contain the same volumes (snapmirror)?

Thanks

Hi @brucquat

I think the easiest way would be to create a NAS client based on NDMP.
When the SVM encounters a fail over to the other cluster node the Data LIF is migrated and the backup will continue to operate based on the configured hostname.

Other way would be to configure the cluster in array management and detect the SVM's for which you can afterwards configure NMDP.

Hi,

The volumes are mirrored in our case. The IP addresses are not migrated after a failover.

Thanks.

Hi @brucquat

Your IP Address situation is an indication towards a solution.
If the address is different, after a failure on the primary site the NDMP address is unavailable.
So the client needs to look at a different address.

You could create a DNS alias for the NDMP client which points to the IP Address used by the Data LIF on the primary Netapp Cluster, in case of a failure you alter the alias to reflect the IP address used by the DR/Secondary NetApp Cluster and the NDMP backup can communicate with the Data LIF again.

I am wondering though if there is a different option as where you can tunnel the connection through the primary NetApp Cluster and pass it on via the NetApp Cluster / SVM peering. Not sure if this is possible via a cluster config…
