Hi!

I’m working with customer who is interested in ZFS support on Linux platform (Debian specifically). Now I’ve been browsing through docs and as I suspected ZFS is not a supported FS for Guest OS file restore with FREL.

https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/32330_live_file_recovery_for_vmware.html

So naturally FS iDA is the way to go. I was surprised when I checked the requirements page and wasn’t able to find ZFS as supported FS on Linux platform

https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/3146_linux_file_system_agent_system_requirements_02.html

It is however supported on platforms like FreeBSD and Solaris

https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/essential/108954_what_is_backed_up_for_unix_file_servers.html

I’ve been curious so I tested this on FREL ova with some additional packages allowing for ZFS to work on OS side, but even then browse is not working on ZFS volumes. I also tested this on Linux FS iDA and had some more luck, cause I was able to backup and successfully restore some data from ZFS volume.

So what I would like to ask is if ZFS is really not supported on Linux OS or is it just a piece missing from documentation?

My guess is that given the nature of ZFS if it’s not in the documentation it’s not supported.

Adding any clustered/distributed file system is much more difficult to support than a traditional filesystem.

I would imagine it would be treated like a Nas filesystem rather than a local FS. With an intellisnap option for zfs send.

In other words I have no idea, but I’m interested to know.

Oh I wanted to like @christopherlecky comment but instead I've marked is a best answer. Can I ask moderator to remove this mark? @Mike Struening can you help?

Sorry for the mess but this buttons are so close to each other on mobile client 🙂

Not the first time, not the last time 🤣

Unmarked!

I’ll check in with some folks on support.

@Robert Horowski , I spoke to the devs involved directly and they asked for a CMR to get this added in.

I created CMR 371668 under your org.  If you have a CCID I should add, I can do that which lets you track it in Command Center.

No ETA, but feel free to ask me from time to time for any status updates.

Hi @Mike Struening !

Thanks for the update and CMR this is a huge help. I will PM you another CCID to add to CMR and hopefully this will be updated in near future.
