CommServe Hardware refresh from Windows 2012 & SQL Server 2012 to Windows 2022

Hello, 

 

We plan to perform a CommServe hardware refresh from Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2019. Commserve is on Feature Release 28, and the SQL server version is 2012. What is the upgrade path for the Commserve with SQL running in 2012? Do we need to first upgrade the SQL to 2014/2016 and then perform the Hardware refresh? Or is it possible to perform a hardware refresh without upgrading the SQL? The documentation doesn’t mention about SQL upgrade path.

You do not have to upgrade the SQL server to perform a hardware refresh.

 

Prepare a new hardware that meet the hardware specifications and system requirements. Install Commvault platform release 28.xx and it also installs SQL server 2019 if it already not present.

 

Then restore the latest commserveDB using CSRevoveryAssistant tool on the new commserve machine.

To answer your question directly, yes you can restore a DR backup taken on SQL 2012 into SQL 2019 no problem. There are a few articles that can help you explain the process of migrating to a new SQL version using a hardware refresh / reinstall.

 

How do you upgrade to a supported SQL release for the CommServe?

Most SQL 2012 installations are legacy installs left over from V10 to V11 upgrades. SQL 2012 included with V10 was enterprise edition, whereas V11 shifted to standard edition. Unfortunately, there is no upgrade path that can change SQL editions, and so a hardware refresh or reinstall of the Commvault software is required to install a more up to date version of SQL server. Yes, you can restore the DR backup of SQL 2012 on to a new hardware machine with SQL 2019.

This SQL 2012 DR backup file is upgraded when running the CSRecoveryAssistant tool on new hardware.

Hi Aravind,

 

Keep in mind that when doing a Hardware Refresh you are commissioning new hardware, thus requiring a new installation of the OS and CommServer, and therefore SQL Server. This new installation will already be in your desire version.

You then just need to use CSRecoveryAssistant to restore your production CSDB.

There is no need to run any upgrades in the Source CS Server you are moving away from.

 

It would be different in the event of an in-place upgrade, were you are just upgrading the OS and SQL Server versions in your current CS and will remain running from it. As Damian has mentioned, that is a different path, unfortunately for SQL Server 2012 Enterprise there is no direct path since all the new versions in use are based in SQL Server Standard, which doesn’t have a direct in-place upgrade path and will require a reinstall of SQL Server anyway.

You could run an in-place upgrade from SQL Server 2012 Enterprise to SQL Server 2019 Enterprise, but the license is not included with Commvault and you will need to cover the cost of it.
