What is the difference between one-way and two-way network/firewall connections?

Hey Neo (love the name :D)You can check out this video on network topologies for configuring networking within Commvault - but to specifically answer your question:One-way means that in order to communicate, only one side is allowed to establish the network connection. Once established the source and destination servers can talk freely over the established network connection.A good example scenario is when you are configuring networks across a DMZ. Typically your internal infrastructure would connect to servers in the DMZ, but DMZs are not allowed to connect to your internal infrastructure due to security reasons. For this, you want to use a one-way topology where the internal servers always establish the connection, and this tells commvault not to try to have the DMZ servers reach out, but instead wait for the remote side.One ‘hidden’ benefit of one-way topologies is that the network connection is always established, this can be helpful if you have some network glitches - one-way is a

What is the best method to restore files from a guest VM protected by VMware backups?

Hi Christine, what i have seen in the field, a restore of guest files direct in a vm is sometimes slower than a restore to an agent and based on the feedback from Jordan there are a lot of options to restore files. try it on your environment to get a feeling for it! Hope that helps you a little bit Cheers Philipp Totally agree and my experience as well. There are protocol slowdowns by routing data through the ESXi webserver which is required for such restores. Almost always you can replicate this by using powercli and running the Copy-VMGuestFile function. This is essentially the same function that Commvault is calling, so its a good way to troubleshoot or validate the bottleneck with slow file restores directly to the guest VM. But lucky that there are multiple options to restore guest files, so if you have larger restores you can use another method!

Great topic - and a powerful part of the Commvault ecosystem!From our APIs (https://api.commvault.com anyone?) to command line, powershell cmdlets, custom reports (combined with alerts and workflows to make apps), workflows… the options are plentiful to integrate Commvault to any app.I think in particular, alerts and workflows are more powerful (and simple to work with) than some people realize. The ability to attach and execute even a basic workflow, using parameters from the alert can provide simple but powerful automation. Internally my teams have used it to build some cool solutions to internal business problems or even prototypes as feature enhancements.You can also couple these elements with system monitoring too, to trigger events and workflows from windows logs other things.When I was in product management, I used workflows a lot to prototype ideas for product enhancements. For example, I created a workflow that would deploy the in-guest plugin to support Application Aware back

CV snapshot in netapp array is not automatically removed once new backup run.

Can you confirm if your finding that old snapshots are being retained beyond the intellisnap backup job retention? And are you seeing successfull job completion (more specifically, are you seeing jobs ‘Completed w/ Errors’)? Thanks Jase Thanks Jase - I think that is the key piece to work out here. Snaps are tied to jobs on the Commvault side. If the snaps still exist but the jobs do not, that is different from troubleshooting why the job is still around and holding the snap.

What is the best method to restore files from a guest VM protected by VMware backups?

It’s been discussed that the MS Windows MA’s running FR11.22 have a significant performance enhancement such that having an in-guest agent may no longer be required. @Damian Andre were you able to get some technical documentation about these improvements? Not aware of any changes. I think there is some functionality change for AHV but not for VMware. Seems unlikely unless there is a new VMware API to consume - the functionality on the Commvault side is straightforward. I’ll ask around! @Anthony.Hodges - Just got word - the enhancements in FR22 are focused around live-browse, so read performance improvements for all recovery methods rather than specifically improving the write performance of agentless recovery. However, they did let the cat out of the bag that they are working on some secret voodoo that should improve agentless recovery. I tried to dig in more but …

Bit of a ‘behind the scenes’. In this community forum, you’ll notice that Commvault employees have a little icon in their avatar along with the ‘vaulter’ demarcation. We’re using a Commvault workflow to assign the right groups so that happens. It's a great general-purpose automation engine that does not have to be solely restricted to data protection - you can use it to glue other things together as well.

My understanding is the following. When I upgrade the Comserve Server I need to also upgrade the two media agents for backups to work Welcome to Commvault - glad to be able to help you out!Yes, it is always best practice to have your Media Agents in-sync with the update level of the CommServe to avoid any issues. Sometimes it's not possible (if you have a huge environment and it takes time to update), in the majority of cases things will function as expected, but Media Agents should be updated as soon as possible. At that stage when everything has had a new feature or hotfix installed; then it would be the case for regression testing. (testing that everything works as it did beforehand) Sounds goodif something is wrong I would need to manually re-install the older version on the media agents. The commserv server could be rolled back as a snapshot (due to being virtual). I would say this is the worst-case scenario for sure. We always want to try to resolve the issue going forward rat

This is great, thank you Pedro - keep those tips coming.There are so many things to help make administration easier you pick up along the way. Once you have been using the software for a bit they become second nature, and you rarely notice using them. My personal favorite is the search bar in Command Center that now has functions and actions. So you can search for a client/subclient and run a backup straight from the search bar rather than having to drill down the tree. Or you can add a new VM group very quickly without having to go through the virtualization pane.This is an older video and it has been way enhanced in the last ~9 months, but it demonstrates what I mean.

MS SQL Granular restore

Hi @virgil - it sounds to me like you enabled block-level backups on the file system agent rather than the SQL agent (although happy to be wrong). Can you verify the following has been set:From the CommCell Console, click Client Computers > client > SQL Server > instance. Right-click a subclient > properties On the Advanced Options tab, select the Optimize for table level restore check box

Index version 2 backups

Hi @Theseeker Media agents are indexing version agnostic - they can all handle both V1 or V2 indexes at the same time, so no issues there. Typically new clients will default to using V2, whereas old clients may need to go through an upgrade procedure to get them to V2, or a new pseudoclient has to be created in some cases (i.e for VMware/virtualization clients). Also, check out the available reports as they can be really helpful.With V2, each backup job (full, diff or incremental) will generate ‘action logs’ - this is the index for the current job, and the current job only. These action logs are protected in each job, similar to V1. If you lost your index, and did not have access to an index backup, Commvault can use all the action logs to reconstruct the index database from all the jobs - however, this is time-consuming and for large backupsets it can take a while before you can begin your restore. In contrast, V1 indexing was a FULL index database backup included with each and every

This platform looks good, but is there going to be a way to archive the old forums so they are searchable? There is a wealth of knowledge there. Hey Michael,The old platform makes this very difficult to do and we didn't want to delay launching the new community while we figured it out. There was also a lot of outdated content, and without proper classification (like we have tags here), we didn't want to bring in the good with the bad. Instead, we looked at the most popular topics and added them here in the run-up to launch. We think we captured a lot of the most pertinent topics, but anything missing should be regenerated here pretty quickly given the easier and faster experience. Appreciate the feedback, it's still something we will evaluate as a few folks enjoyed the content on the old forums.
