Hello Everyone,

we have migrated few mailboxes from on-prem to cloud, and we would like to backup these mailboxes one time for long term retention(diff retention from our regular jobs). we would assign o365 licenses, do a backup then remove o365 licenses.

in my understanding, whether o365 license is removed, cvlt will continue to keep/protect the data based on retention set?

Would commvault license continue to be counted or release along w/ o365 license?

thank you for your feedback or recommendations.

@benv

Q: in my understanding, whether o365 license is removed, cvlt will continue to keep/protect the data based on retention set?

A: Correct, we will retain the data regardless of the mailboxes license status

Q: Would commvault license continue to be counted or release along w/ o365 license?

A: You have to ‘Exclude from backup’ the mailbox from content or disable the mailbox from archive in order to reduce the CV License.

Note: You only see the ‘disable’ option in JAVA console. If  you ‘exclude from backup’ using Command Center, this does the same thing.

@Chris Hollis,

i thought when a o365 licenses are removed, CV will automatically skipped these mailboxes and triggers CV mailbox license reduce when all mailboxes under content is selected?

Correct, it checks the MB status automatically every 24 hours. If the user no longer has a valid MSFT license, it will convert them to a ‘shared’ mailbox and drop the CV license count.

Use the above methods to exclude the mailboxes from CV license calculation if you do not want to release the MSFT license or if you had some sort of issue where jobs couldn’t run as you are over your CV license limit, you could do the above without needing to wait for the 24 hour discovery process to run and update the mailbox status.
