Hi @jwood
Good day!
It depends on what type of data is present inside the VM and how you would like to protect it .
The below doc provides the details on what we protect on doing a hyper-v virtual backup and details
https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/essential/hyper_v.html
Regarding the installation of agents on all VMs, it is generally recommended to install the agent only on VMs that require advanced backup capabilities, such as those hosting databases or critical applications. This approach helps manage resources and licensing efficiently.
If you need details on specific agents go through the below docs
https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/backup_and_restore_agents.html

Thank you for the reply. We’ve had the standard backups going on via the hyper-v servers for some time now, so it’s really just the advanced capabilities we are interested in.
So yes, to your point, I think our primary interest would be in servers hosting databases. So again, just for clarification, would that be achieved via the “backup agents” and how is that install process done? I see several types of agent in that second link but it doesn’t talk about the process.
Thanks,
@Sureshkumar S
Just checking in on my previous comment on this. Thanks.
@Javier yes that helps...some, but where is the agent for application aware backups actually obtained from? The documentation doesn’t seem to link to that.

It is just the regular agent but installed on the VM.
So downloading the right agent from the bootstrapper or from the CS into the Software Cache is all you would need
