We have an Active Directory Forest with 6 sub-domains. What are the best practices for backing up this configuration?
Backup of AD objects only is not suitable. Backup is needed in case of complete loss of the entire AD server.
Would it be better to back up the entire virtual machine with AD or is it better to back up individual elements.

Right now I’m going to say to protect the entire domain controller with a FS / system state backup to recover the entire forest. Microsoft has been somewhat vague on VM backups for restoration of AD - I would use a separate system state backup to be safe.
But watch this space… Commvault is bolstering its AD protection very soon
