Hi all, a new Commvault user here.

We are trying to perform a restore from a tape. However, the "Mark for Catalog" option is missing in the Command Center. It's a feature in the CommCell Console, which we don't have access to.

This is a standard feature that we need in our backup policy. What is the best way to restore VMs directly from tape (without the database or sync) ?

Hey @DTO

The best way is to have the job history in the database; What is the scenario where you are trying to restore without the CommServe database?

You could set up a replica CommServe on a DR site using CommServe Live Sync - not sure if that would work in your scenario.

Otherwise, through support you can request access to the CommCell console to perform a catalog and merge option.

Thanks for the support so far. We now have a permanent CommCell Console in place. However, the catalog function still isn't working as expected.

In our setup, we have two Commvault servers:

  • Server A is our regular backup server.

  • Server B is an offline DR site. It's a clone of Server A, created periodically by us using the recovery tool.

Server A is aware that Server B exists, even though it is offline.

Here's the issue:

Whenever I try to catalog a tape with VM backups (originally written by Server A) on Server B, the tape is initially recognized by the library, but the cataloging process does not progress — it stays stuck at 0%.

Cataloging is critical for us as a fallback option in case the index or database is lost. It was also defined as a requirement for our DR setup.
