Correct steps for ending/retiring backups

Forum|alt.badge.img+2

I thought I had this previously, but it’s not working as expected.

I have a VM that has been replaced.  The VM still exists, though eventually I’ll delete it an associated files.  So I’d like to stop the backup process. My initial understanding is that you stop the process and then backups are retained until the retention time is reached.

What I did was went into the option and chose to RETIRE.  However, the VM is still being backed up.  There’s also an option that says Do not back up.  So I’m confused.  What are my correct stops here to stop backing up and ultimately remove this device?

Hi @jwood ,

If the VMs are removed from the cluster server and a full backup is subsequently run against the VM subclient, the jobs associated with the removed VMs will age out as per the configured retention policy.

Hi @jwood

Kindly refer below document to remove the unwanted VM from being backed up. Generally VM's are discovered under sub client, Either you can exclude the unwanted VM by using filter option or remove the VM from sub client.

Pradeep,

I believe that I understand.  I am adding the VMs in my case from under the Cluster Server.  So am I to understand you that my first step is to remove it there?

If so, does that automatically mean that the backup will start aging out? Or is there any further retirement process that needs to be done?

Okay - and the cluster server is listed as a hypervisor, so I’m adding it under there.  So essentially it sounds like as long as I remove the server as a selected device under that hypervisor, then the job will age out and I should not need to do anything further?
