Hi All,

Data Multiplexing with Multi Streaming, example, a three stream data protection operation is performed with a multiplexing factor of three. J~1~, J~2~, and J~3~ are data protection operations, and each used three streams. There are three drives available, D~1~, D~2~, and D~3~.

If there is data multiplexing with a multiplexing factor of three.

The first job (J~1~) uses three drives, D~1~, D~2~, and D~3~:

D~1~ - J~1~

D~2~ - J~1~

D~3~ - J~1~

Refer above example, may we know more detail as below?

- if J~1~ backup only one VM (without client agent) with three stream, will the VM backup in three tape Tape1, Tape2 and Tape3?

- if the VM backup in three tape, should it must have three tape drive when restore? What impact if only one drive available when restore?

- if J~1~ backup 10 VMs (without client agent) with three stream, is by VM backup in three tape drive? e.g. whole VM1 backup in Tape1, whole VM2 backup in Tape2 and whole VM3 backup in Tape3

- if J~1~ three stream backup (with client agent), should it must have three tape drive when restore? What impact if only one drive available when restore?

Best regards

hello @Chinchilla

Q1: - if J~1~ backup only one VM (without client agent) with three stream, will the VM backup in three tape Tape1, Tape2 and Tape3?

A1: Depends if the option “Use Device Streams rather than multiplexing if possible” is ticked. By Default, it is unticked and will result in us using just 1 drive with the 3 multiplexing streams. If it is enabled, we will have 1 stream on each of the 3 drives.

Q2: - if the VM backup in three tapes, should it have three tape drive when restore? What impact if only one drive available when restore?

A2: The 3 tapes are needed and for efficient restores 3 drives should be used but If only 1 is available it will still work.

Q3: - if J~1~ backup 10 VMs (without client agent) with three stream, is by VM backup in three tape drive? e.g. whole VM1 backup in Tape1, whole VM2 backup in Tape2 and whole VM3 backup in Tape3

A3: We don’t separate tapes by VM’s, but we do it by stream. So, our reservation could spread the data over multiple tapes or on one for the VM. Based on what is available at the time of backup and how many streams are running.

Q4: - if J~1~ three stream backup (with client agent), should it must have three tape drive when restore? What impact if only one drive available when restore?

A4: Same question as Question 2.

Please advise if this answers your quesitons.

Kind regards
Albert Williams
