We are planning to change retention to one of the active plan. Currently "Backed up version retention" is set to infinite. We would like to change it to 365 days. Will it have any impact on running backup jobs ?

Hi, it shouldn’t. Just new files will be retained accordingly to new policy.

All backups within the policy/plan will adopt the new retention.

If you set it to 365 days, but have backups that are retained for longer due to the current Infinite retention, they may and will age once the retention is dropped to 365 days.

@Javier , what do we mean by they may and will age once the retention is dropped to 365 days.

I am in the same situation. For Exchange Online, Retain deleted items is set for 2 years. But backed up version retention" is set to infinite. I wanted to change it to 2 years as well. But dont know the consequences.

Question 1) What exactly is backed up version retention? As in for Exchange Online, all backup versions of a person's mailbox?

Question 2) What happens when we change the backed up version retention to lower duration. Does the older backed up version get deleted?
