Extended Retentions are not adhering to retention rules in place

I'm having some issues with Retention cycles not adhering to the rules we give them. Are normal cycles are inc/diff are 7 days 1 Cycle, Weekly Full 28 days 1 cycle and Monthly Full for 1095+ 1 cycle. The daily retention we have no problems with , but its the weekly and monthly full’s that are not working correctly. The weekly full’s would keep the retention of a monthly full and the monthly full would keep the retention of a weekly full. I don't know if the “For Weekly Full Rule the Week Starts on” or the “For Monthly Full Rule the Month starts on “ is causing the issue, or if the “For all rules keep the:” is causing the problem.I don't know what these three rules technically do so i need help understanding these three to understand if i have them set incorrectly for the rules i am trying to set. “For Weekly Full Rule the Week Starts on”“For Monthly Full Rule the Month starts on ““For all rules keep the:”

Role Permission allowed an unauthorized action

We have certain users who are wanting to be able to create reports for their clients being backed up inside of Commvault. We are wanting to only allow them to view their client(s), libraries, and jobs without the capability of adding/remove/editing/creating. The Only thing we we want them to add/edit are reports that they can create for their environment and that's it. Somehow back in May they were able to stop one of their jobs due to it causing a connection issue to the client causing a network traffic. this was an illegal operation which they performed, and my managment was not happy. I have attached their role profile. I am confused as to how they were able to perform this action based on the role settings. Any help as to get to the reult of what we are looking for is greatly appreciated.

Upgrading Commvault SQL Database

Our Database team which handles SQL servers and SQL databases has sent us a notice that they are wanting to upgrade the SQL Database from 2014 to 2019. “Hello Team,BKR-BKCOM-01/COMMVAULT is still running on an old version of SQL 2014, hence we need to upgrade the server to latest version of 2019. Can you help us on how to proceed? This is a physical server so we need a new physical server to host the 2019 version then move the databases. Once tested, then we can offline the old 2014 version and online the new server to production.”I don't know if they are saying they want a new server for the Commvault Commserve or if they are hinting at their own server, which makes no sense why he added that in the email. Our specs for the commserve easily matches the SQL recommendations for 2019. Backing up Exchange Databases from HD Library to tape

We had to back up some exchange Dags for short term retentions to an 3Par Disk library. The Mount Path is from one of our media agents where i can see what's stored on the 3Par. My boss wants me to back up the month of September that we have on disk to tape, so we can clear it out from the 3Par for another month of Storage. Would the best way to back this up to tape would be to create a subclient on the media agent the drive is mounted to , target the Data Chuncks for the time of the month he wants backed up, and assign it a storage policy that will back it up to tape, or will that not capture the data we want from the 3Par?

Selective Copy Aux Copy No data needs to be copied

Got a storage policy with a active selective Copy that is supposed to copy the data written to a HDD library and copy it to a tape. It missed its aux backup for whatever reason. When trying to manually run an aux copy from the storage policy it tells me there is no Data that needs to be copied when clearly there is no job records of the aux performing backups. How do i force an aux copy without this error popping up .

Separating a monthly full backup from Weekly full, best practice?

We are using a tape environment for our backups. One of the issues i have with commvaults storage policy is that it doesn't really have a difference on how it does full backups. Our retention cycles are a daily backup (Differentials) of 7 days 1 cycle, weekly full 28 days 1 cycle, and a monthly full with 1095 days +. Currently with how the storage policy is set up it is running to the default, all the data is being dumped to one tape and usually has monthly, daily and weekly data on the same tape. I notice when i pull my monthlies i sometimes will see that the weekly fulls and daily are eating up space that could be used to fill more monthly fulls unto the tape.I was wondering what would be the best practice to separate the monthly full away from the other backup retentions of the storage policy? Would it be something along th3e lines of creating an aux copy in the storage policy and just copy the last weekly full to the aux copy to separate the monthly full from the other data? or is

log4shell a Commvault application, support updates?

one of our departments is saying our servers we use for Commvault are using log4shell v1.2x. They need to update it to v2.16.0. Im green when it comes to this topic. is this log4shell a third party app which the server has installed prior to Commvault software, or is this something that Commvault installs, and is resolved by updating the Commvault software? Thats where the confusion comes into play for me, because it comes down to whether or not the department that brought this up is asking us for permissions to update it, or if this is something to do with commvault software which my team needs to handle?

Can an incremental storage policy be used for multiple storage policies?

In order to remove excess storage policies, I was wondering if incremental storage policies can be shared across multiple storage policies? We use the incremental storage policies for our daily backups which has a short retention cycle of 7 days 1 cycle.

Vault Tracking Export Media after "Job" Finishes

So new to Vault Tracking, and want to deploy it into our backup environment. The only concern is that in order to enable it, you have to check “Export Media After Job Finishes” The schedule is of course set to a storage policy which has up to 20 + clients associated to it. My concern is the wording of “Export Media After Job Finishes” because its not clear if its saying it will export a tape once a job finishes as in job 1 of 20 is done it will export that tape, and so on and so forth making up to 20+ tapes, or if it is referring to the specific Job associated to it at the schedule level. For example, we have a schedule that runs for these 20+ clients that run a daily diferential backup, weekly full backup, and a monthly full backup. If i enable vault tracking on the weekly Schedule would the “Export Media After Job Finishes” refer to the weekly full schedule as being the “job?

Media Agents can be physical or virtual?

Dumb Question, but I don't want to have to have my systems team argle bargle. Media Agents have to be physical servers, correct? I am assuming there shouldn't be a reason why it cannot be a virtual machine, but before I put my foot in my mouth (tasty btw) I want to see what the community best practice is.

Migrating an Index Cache from One Media Agent to another?

We had a media agent that was recently decommissioned. The location in which the media agent was located was shut down. The server was shipped to our site where we have it ready to be cabled up and redeployed. The initial thought from my colleagues is that we had to get this media agent back online in order for index cash on that server to be used again. But my management is asking whether or not we can just transfer the media agents index cash from that server to another media agent?So instead of having to rehook up this media agent in order for the tapes that came from this location to be read, that we can move the index cache that was on this server to another media agent, and then any tapes that came from this site would then just read from a current active media agent for its index cash?

Easy way to determine low throughput of data traffic

One of the things that is going to blow up here in my company soon is some jobs are taking over 24 hours to backup x amount of data. the clients which have huge durations are usually windows or linux file systems with variences of data being backed up from 2 TB to 8 TB+. My systems and networking department don't like to help unless all evidences point to an actual problem with either the network, or the server itself that is causing the latency of duration. Is there an easy way on commvault’s end to point out that “this client is running at this x GB/Hr, compared to when it was X GB/Hr” and prove that its not the backup software is causing the issue? I know when a active job runs it shows average throughput, and when double clicking on the job id it shows a percentage (Read: X%, Network X%) but I don't know if that's showing the percentage of what's causing the job s duration or what its trying to show. I want to avoid tidious work of going back and forth with my departments on each

Reporting on environment that shows how much data has not been modified that we are backing up

My Boss found something he wants as a report and I don't know if there is a way specifically provide it. After reviewing a FLA (File Level Analytical) Report, the report shows specific servers that are backed up showing how much data we are backing up per client that hasn't been modified within Less than 3 Months, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, 1-2 Years, 2-5 Years, More than 5 Years. My boss loves this view point on a client level but wants to know if Commvault can do this on a grand level to show how much data we are backing up as a whole that hasnt been modified within Less than 3 Months, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, 1-2 Years, 2-5 Years, More than 5 Years. Does anyone know if there is a report such as this? My boss wants it at per site, but trying to think Commvault level and see if this is possible at library level, or media agent level?

Splitting Workload of data backups to increase backup performance

We have two clients that we are backing up which are taking up a huge amount of time to back up. Commvault confirmed its not the backups but the data traffic that is causing extreme lengths in time to back up. My networking team cannot go any further to increase the throughput for data. Brought this issue to my management and suggested to have a normal backup happen to the client on a daily basis and with a weekly full but the difference is to only have the backups not backup anything 45 days or older. Then once a quarter do a full backup of everything (including all the 45 days and older)This runs into an issue because I don't know how to setup another default subclient on the clients in order to generate a quarterly backup. I know normally this is all resolved if we have Commvault deduplication, but my companies motto is work harder not smarter and decided its to costly to have this option. Proper way to set up subclient in a VMware virtual client.

So we recently had a run in with a database issue with our VMware client, which made us not allow us to add or modify new/existing subclients. Although i never got a straight answer as to what caused it, the rep was hinting that we had way to many subclients. My question is two fold; How do we properly and efficiently group them together inside the virtual client, and if we have for example 20 vm’s together inside a subclient, if one fails, how do we backup that individual failed vm without having to re-backup the other 19 that were sucessfull? We have a tape enviroment so backing up redundant data is something i am trying to avoid.

Changing User Account for a backup?

So we have certain servers/vm’s that are in a controlled environment that only has certain level of permissions to have access to. The primary user account we use for are normal backups does not have access to this environment inside of the Virtual Machine Client for vm backups. I am wondering if there is an easy way to change the user account the vm backups use so that i can have it use my credentials which does have access in order to get a backup through a vm backup?

Description of Processes and Services of Commvault Process Mgr

Due to the lovely time of the year (which is all the time) we have auditors wanting to know every nook and cranny of Commvault. The current ones are wanting to know the full list of each specific process and Services that Commvault would be using on the client and media agent. I found this document <Click Here> inside the documentation which displays certain services and processes, but still missing a few like BlrSvc and CIMgrS. I just need to compile the name, if its a Commvault or OS process or service, and a brief description of what they do. Is there something like that somewhere?

Would Clients Under an exchange dag have dags in their backups?

So in an effort to clean up our environment, we are trying to get our sla pushed to %97 and above. One of the issues is the clients that are part of the Exchange dag have no scheduled backups. My concern is that if I start backing up these clients, that they would be backing up the dags which is being backed up by our exchange backups that we are doing. Is the software smart enough to notice that the exchange client is part of an exchange cluster, and will not backup the dags which the exchange job is doing, or would i be double backing up dags if i started backing up the nodes as well?

Virtual Snapshot/Backups in Commvault don't count towards license?

We have a third party vendor with our company that is asking a particularly weird question which honestly I don't know where he got this information, and I need some advice rather than just throwing a ticket at it which I don't think it requires one. We are trying to migrate a lot of our backups process from tape to Nimble environments or Storage Arrays, and some of the big backups that we're doing to the storage arrays are virtual snapshots of our VM environments from our VMware. This vendor, which is not affiliated with Commvault, is stating that Commvault capability of doing VM snapshots is technically not counting towards licenses within Commvault because it is capable of providing backups of its snapshots free of service within Commvault which doesn't count towards our license. Is this true? For me I was told from the get-go that anything that we back up with in the Commvault environment will have a charge per terabyte whether it be file level system backups, virtual snapshot

Does Commvault handle Microsoft Azure DNS and SQL?

So I am out of the womb new to Microsoft Azure. Our company is wanting to add Azure into our environment, and tried setting up some vm’s with azure which sadly I'm awaiting for my systems team to help me with. I poked them again to get the project started, however, he was talking about they are looking into Microsoft Azure DNS, and Azure SQL, and was wondering if Commvault handles backups for these two products for Azure? I straight up don't know the answer fully and tried googling, but just got more confused. If any of you guys know if these are straight forward something Commvault handles, or if “SQL” and “DNS” is to vague of a description. Let me know and point out some articles that i can take back to them for further collaboration.

Creating different environments within Commvault for access.

To try to best explain the situation we need to possibly have 3 environments set up in the Commvault CommServe for our organization. We would technically need to have this in order to separate our three groups that have access to the Commserve already to their respective environments that they would be able to have access to. Currently I have modified their security profiles in order to access certain libraries and media agents but this is proving to be difficult to maintain and I'm just wondering if I'm going about this the wrong way and that there is an easier way to separate the organizations. So for example if I have Group 1 group 2 and Group 3 that have their own individual clients and media agents and libraries that are associated to those groups, then I could associate user accounts to who can have access to those particular groups.I'm wondering if setting these up as companies would be the better option in the web GUI of the comserve or what would be the best practice for this

No Index Backup in last 30 days

So the ticketing service is kind of being slow with this process, and i want to know if I can do this on my own. We have an alert for No Index Backup in the last 30 days. I don't know why they are not storing the index information on the media agents but storing the index data to tape. How do i get a client that is on this list for no index backup to get the index to backup to the media agent so i can get rid of this list?
