We started using Active later last year, ( Amazing for those who have not deployed this yet) and while the file system projects are useful and abundant, I am wanting to add our exchange servers. Does anyone know if you can use just the DB of the exchange server ? or does each mailbox have to be collected within commvault for the crawl/scan to work?

Good day Mathew.  You will need to deploy the mailbox agent to be able index for eDiscovery.

You can perform legal and compliance-related searches using simple searches or advanced search queries. Relevant data can be added to a case or can be exported to deliver the data in convenient and useful formats.

You can work with the following data in the eDiscovery and Compliance solution:

  • Exchange User Mailbox (Exchange archiving)
  • Exchange Journal Mailbox (Exchange journaling)
  • Exchange SMTP Contentstore Mailbox (SMTP journaling)

Below are some helpful links for Activate.

Hi ,
When I implemented this in an FR21 environment it was from Mailbox level.
My suspicion is that for Exchange as the source, it would have to be Mailbox based backup for SDG or Compliance/eDiscovery. - But I’ll let the Commvault team confirm that!

Best Regards,

Michael

This is also my thoughts as well. Was thinking if the DB’s were protected, it could offline crawl those for items.

The Activate suite is based on Mailbox Level IDA data not Database.

Thanks- We dont backup the mailboxes individually. Since this is a DAG- the DB’s are backed up and then restored etc. IMO a faster backup window than each mailbox.

THanks for the info.
