Adding another Media Agent to the existing tape storage pool

Hi Commvault gurus!

I would like to ask about the process of adding new Media Agents to an existing tape library storage pool. Let's assume the new Media Agent is physically attached to the tape library and everything is properly connected from a hardware perspective. Do we need to deconfigure and reconfigure the tape library in the Commvault Console? I can't find an option to add a new Media Agent to the existing tape storage pool, unlike the process for adding a Media Agent to an existing disk storage pool.

Any input will be much appreciated!

Hi @drPhil ,

Can you pls follow these steps from expert storage configuration and confirm?

https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/expert_storage_configuration_getting_started.html

  1. Log on to CommCell Console.

  2. On the ribbon in the CommCell Console, click the Storage tab, and then click Expert Storage Configuration.

  3. Under Available MediaAgents, select the MediaAgents that are attached to the library and on which the library needs to be configured and then click Add >>.

    Click OK.

    Note

    • To configure any shared library, make sure that you select all of the MediaAgents that share the library.

    • If a device has already been configured for the MediaAgent, the device appears in the Expert Storage Configuration dialog box.

    • For cluster, select the cluster server as the MediaAgent.

  4. If a library is not configured, a message appears that asks you to configure the library. Click OK.

Hi @Abhishek Narulkar, thank you very much for your contribution.

Your link pointed me to the right direction. Indeed, I have found out that our drive pool type is SAN. Therefore, I assume, that after installing MediaAgent package on the system, this MA could be automatically added to the tape library environment (if all correctly mapped from the hardware point of view), because in the CV Console there is a checked option Auto create DDS Drive Pool:

Unfortunately, I dont know, how could be possible to add a new MediaAgent manually, since the documentation only writes about how To Automatically Configure the MediaAgents That Share the Library in SAN: https://documentation.commvault.com/11.20/san_attached_libraries_configuration.html#to-automatically-configure-the-mediaagents-that-share-the-library-in-san

As previously stated, the shared tape library has been already created, it is just about adding additional MediaAgents….

Hi all,

As I assumed, I was completely right. After physically attaching the new Media Agent to the tape library (i.e., cabling into the SAN area) and ensuring everything was properly connected from a hardware perspective, the Media Agent was automatically added to the tape library environment in the Commvault Console after restarting the Commvault service on the Media Agent server (assuming everything was correctly mapped from a hardware standpoint). Therefore, the previously shared link to the documentation is valid for SAN attached libraries.

Thank you all for your contributions.
