Hi Team,

we planned to upgrade the commserve from sp24 to sp28 and the sql installed on the commserve is sql 2014. will sql2014 work after we upgrade our commserve to sp28 ?

Good afternoon.  The software will look for a supported version of SQL server.  SQL 2014 is not supported in FR28 so the software will install a supported version, most likely SQL 2016.

Thanks, Orazan, so when do the upgrade from sp24 to sp28. will the SQL automatically upgrade on the background as well or do i need to do anything?

The upgrade will leave the SQL version that you have installed. If you want to use a newer SQL version, first you have to validate if the OS for existing CommServe will support it or if you have to deploy a new machine.

This is the process we call CommServe hardware refresh, the one I normally use when we want to use a newer OS or SQL Server version for the CommServe.

Other option will be to upgrade the SQL version installed directly using MSSQL binaries but this is outside of CommVault.

Thanks, Ledoesp, my concern is we are just doing normal sp upgrade from 24 to 28 and our commserve db is in sql 2014. Will sp28 support sql 2014 as i can't find any documents related to it saying it will support.

I did an upgrade this week from 11.24.40 to 11.28.44. SQL version installed is SQL 2014 before and after the CommServe update. Of course, hardware refresh should be planned for using a newer SQL version, but that was not part of my scope for that customer.

Look at this link from 11.22, since 11.16 we started with MSSQL2016:

https://documentation.commvault.com/11.22/expert/2801_commserve_server_system_requirements.html

If now you check this link 11.23, where MSSQL 2014 is removed:

https://documentation.commvault.com/11.23/expert/2801_commserve_server_system_requirements.html

You are in 11.24, should you be concerned already? MSSQL 2014 is removed as well.

https://documentation.commvault.com/11.24/expert/2801_commserve_server_system_requirements.html

So if you get the idea, update will work but plan for having the SQL version to a recent one. Or if you prefer there is an alternative other option, keep 11.24 and update to MSSQL 2019 and then update to 11.28.

Thanks Ledoesp than i will upgrade the sp24 to sp28 with sql 2014 by today. In future, we will plan to upgrade the sql 2014 to 2019 separately
