Hi,

Our customer has an Oracle 12 DB with 9TB of capacity. RMAN gets a backup of 1.5TB because of compression.

Does Commvault support RMAN compression? I mean, besides Commvault’s own client and MediaAgent compression, can Commvault just take that 1.5TB compressed by RMAN and put it in the library?

Thanks!

Sergio

Hey @Sergio V,

Was chatting with one of our oracle experts. They say if you leave the default rman compression level on basic or low then you can safely leave commvault compression enabled. If you set rman to use a higher level of compression then its recommended to disable commvault compression.

If you use TDE then there are different recommendations

Use the following settings when you have an Oracle database that uses Transparent Data Encryption (TDE):

  • Deduplication is enabled

  • RMAN compression is disabled on the client (i.e set it to Basic)

  • Commvault compression is enabled

  • Set the Data Files (BFS) value to 1

Thank you very much!
