Question

Exchange DAG Restore - The range of log files is missing (error -528)

Hello Community!

I would like to ask you guys if maybe someone have similar issue with Exchange DAG restores as we have in one of the environment.

The case is not a fresh one, i had a ticket for around a year in commvault - but they did not find the solution. At the end they recommended (we suggested it and they agreed) to enable “Perform Consistency Check” on the exchange backup schedules. We did it few weeks ago, and now we tried to test restores, but we still see the same issues at the end of the restore process.

The issue is not easy to troubleshoot, because databases are big (around 1TB each) and restore process is failing at the very end. It restores around 1 TB of data, and failing with the error:

“EventLog[ID=519(0x207)@108527931297102]: msexchangerepl (11780,D,100,15.02.1544.011) Logfile Integrity-Check D:\EXDB\EX19DB-MN\E11: The range of log files D:\EXDB\EX19DB-MN\E11007E546B.log to D:\EXDB\EX19DB-MN\E11007E54B4.log is missing (error -528) and cannot be used. If these log files are required for recovery, a good copy of these log files will be needed for recovery to complete successfully. For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp. “

The only software which is taking a backup is Commvault. We do not use any  custom antywirus software. I’m performing a restore from pretty fresh cycle (full+incrementals) from the jobs which were taken with Consistency Check enabled.

We have a DAG configuration with three nodes here (one on WS2019, two on WS2022). It’s Exchange 2019.

Do maybe someone have an idea how to troubleshoot it further? we already checked the DAG configurations, we even created new fresh windows machine with standalone Exchange installed on it, and tried to use it as restore point, but it also failed here with the same error.

Thanks in advance for help.

Regards,

Matt

Hello @Mateusz Slezak

Good day!

The error message you are encountering indicates a problem with missing log files during the recovery process of an Exchange database. Specifically, the error -528 suggests that the range of log files from E11007E546B.log to E11007E54B4.log is absent, which is critical for completing the recovery.

Since we're restoring from recent jobs that had Consistency Check enabled, this should help resolve the issue. It's crucial to ensure the backup is consistent and contains all required log files.

The Exchange server relies on these logs to maintain data integrity during the restoration process

Restore the Database as Restore Out of Place Restore without Recovery, please check how it goes,

Once restore is completed, use the eseutil /mh command to check the status of your database. If it indicates a "Dirty Shutdown," you may need to perform repairs

eseutil /mh <dbname>

Hello,

“Once restore is completed, use the eseutil /mh command to check the status of your database. If it indicates a "Dirty Shutdown," you may need to perform repairs

eseutil /mh <dbname>”

-I know that it will work, but it’s not a case.

We do not need to restore a specific DB ASAP, we are doing restore tests to verify the backups.

We need this restores to start working as they should, without any walkarounds.

I think it is impossible to check in this FR a “backed up items” list and verify if eg. E11007E546B.log was protected by Commvault, but I can do a “View Successfully Restored items”, which I did, and search the list for this missing logs, and did not find them.

You can see above, that the last log was with suffix 6A.log, and 6B is indeed missing (was not restored at all).

Thanks in advance for help.

Regards,

Matt
