Hello Team,

We are using Commvault backup with Commserve live sync option.

Planning to configure new media agent and storage as mentioned in below.

  • Newly two new media agent servers to be configured.
  • Newly configuration of Disk libraries
  • No need to migrate current backup data and instead will create new storage policies and new sub client jobs.

Please advise is this configuration fine and any configuration level will be done of live sync.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @AnandK ,

Your configuration is fine. No additional configuration is required for CommServe LiveSync when adding new Media Agents and disk libraries, as long as you are not migrating existing backup data. All new configuration including new Media Agents, libraries, storage policies, and subclients will be replicated by LiveSync automatically.

Ensure the Media Agents and disk libraries are visible and accessible in both the production and standby CommServe environments. Ensure network connectivity (required ports open) between new Media Agents & CS, Clients.
If you use non-deduplication storage for LiveSync operations, continue this practice for new disk libraries if they will be involved in DR or LiveSync-related backups.

Dheeraj

Hi,

For the license perspective, If we will go for the configuration of new sub client and adding the same backup content the license will consume additional or same license will use.

For example the VM’s backup or File system backup already the sub client is configured using current library and now we are planning to configure new disk library with new sub client with same backup data. Is it double of the license will consume.

Hi @AnandK ,

When you configure a new subclient and include backup content (such as the same VM or file system) that is already protected by another active subclient, Commvault treats each instance separately. This results in increased license usage, as the system counts the protected data per active subclient—even if the data is duplicated.

Default Subclient Behavior is when a VM or file system is added to a user-defined subclient, it is automatically excluded from the default subclient. However, if you manually add the same data to multiple user-defined subclients, each one will still count toward license usage.

To avoid unnecessary license consumption, Ensure each dataset is protected by only one active subclient unless there's a specific operational need.

Avoid configuring multiple subclients with overlapping content. If you need to change the storage policy (e.g., move data to a different disk library with a new MAs), update the existing subclient’s storage policy data path to new library, instead of creating a new subclient with the same content.

If creating new subclients with different storage policies is necessary, consider disabling backup activity on the original subclients. This ensures that only the new subclients are counted towards capacity usage (applicable when using the Capacity License model).

Capacity usage can decrease because of any of the following actions:

- Disabling backups on the subclient.

License usage is outlined here : https://documentation.commvault.com/v11/software/backups_in_capacity_calculation.html
