Merging CommServe with existing MediaAgent – Is This Possible Despite Best Practices?

Hello Commvault community,

In one of our customer environments, we currently have a small setup with a dedicated CommServe (CS) and a separate MediaAgent (MA) handling Office 365 backups.

We now have a request to "merge" the CommServe role into the existing MediaAgent system, effectively combining both roles on a single machine.

I'm aware that it's generally not recommended to run the CommServe and MediaAgent roles on the same system, as per Commvault best practices, due to potential performance and scalability issues. However, is there any supported way to make this happen, especially in a small environment?

Is this scenario technically possible, and if so, what steps or considerations should we follow?

I would greatly appreciate your feedback, experiences, or any references to documentation that could help.

Thank you in advance!
Nikos

Hi @Nikos.Kyrm ,

Combining components in this scenario is not recommended due to security considerations.

However, for the Media Agent hardware refresh, kindly refer to the documentation below and follow the outlined instructions to ensure a smooth and compliant process.

Hello @Pradeep

Thanks for your reply!

Actually, we are not looking for hardware refresh (moving) of MediaAgent.

The request is to move the CS (that is currently in a VM) into the existing MA (that is currently in a physical server).

Is there any feedback / documentation for this scenario?

Best regards,
Nikos

Hi @Nikos.Kyrm ,

Please note that moving the CommServe role to a Media Agent may require reconfiguration of the Media Agent, especially if the current MA is registered with a different CommServe hostname or gateway, which currently corresponds to the existing CommServe.

Additionally, after the migration, it may be necessary to:

  • Reconfigure the MA to reflect the new CommServe settings,

  • And Install CommServe-related packages on the MA machine to ensure proper communication and functionality.

  • Refer below document to install CS packages on the MA machine to make this has All in one CS server.
