The backup gateway functions as a gateway between a data source and the Metallic cloud backup service. The backup gateway resides adjacent to the data source to provide low latency and high performance.

The following cases require a backup gateway:

• You want to protect on-premises applications

• In addition to a cloud copy of the backup data, you need a local copy

• The outbound network security is restricted or blocked from a data source

• You want to protect cloud resources in Amazon Web Services (AWS)
