I am replacing my Windows 2012 CommVault physical server with new 2019 physical server.  I have several disk drives on the current server with commvault backup data I need to retain and I have same configuration on the new server except with larger disks.

How do I migrate the CV database & data to new server?

@Stickley

Please refer to CS and MA hardware refresh docs here -

https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/4739_commserve_hardware_refresh_overview.html

https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/11069_mediaagent_hardware_refresh_overview.html

These outline the steps / procedures you need to follow to complete this task.

Any questions please let me know.

Regards,

Chris

Chris,

Thank you.  I will review the processes.

Are you implying you have local disks in the CS which are used as a Disk Library?

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,

That is correct, I have 20TB of internal storage on the server and an Attached QNAPP NAS with an additional 150TB

Are the local disks and NAS shares being used for the same Disk Library?

Does the NAS array have at least 20TB of available space at the moment?  I ask this because I wonder if it would be worth migrating the Mount Paths using local disks to the NAS storage, which would be much easier to migrate between Media Agents than local disks.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,

Below is a screen shot of the Storage & Libraries.  I have space available to create another LUN on the NAS to move the Internal data to if that would make the migration easier.

OK, you have several local paths in your Disk Library.

When you refresh the CS, the new CS will need access to these.  During a MA refresh, this is easier because you can have both MAs online at the same time and move the data between them.  For a CS refresh, you are not going to have both CS online at the same time.  It makes it more complicated.

Hence why I was asking if you have space on the NAS.  If you could move these local paths to the NAS, the new CS will automatically have access to all of the Mount Paths when it comes online.  Nothing needs to be moved between the physical hosts.

Thanks,
Scott

Hello all,

I've been looking for help and I found this Post. I need to do an Hardware Refresh of my Commserver and Media Agent with local Disk Library but unlike to Stickley I don’t have any external storage like NAS or SAN. Scott, Could you recommend me an option to perform a migration to local disk library to other local disk library on new hardware?

I´ve think that on process of hardware refresh of Commserver and MA, maybe I need first install the MA, execute mount path migration from actual MA to new MA, continue with DR backup of commserver and shut down Commserver actual. Install Commserver on new Hardware and restore DR backup at same time of installation proccess.

Could this works?

Thanks

Commvault Aux Copy has been doing these migrations for decades.  😀

Create the new disk library.  Add the new library as a new copy to your existing policy/plan.  Aux copy the data from your old disk library to this new disk library.  Promote the new copy and decom the old copy -- I think this part of the process still may need to be completed through Java.

Thanks,
Scott

Hello Scott,

Thanks for your reply. I don’t have experience working with Aux copy. It´s necessary install a new MA on new hardware to create new disk library and configure Aux Copy on Actual Commserver?

Apply the same BD DR restore on new hardware when the data has been migrated?

I think you should probably invest in a PS engagement for assistance.  There are a many moving parts in CS, MA and Storage refreshes and you don’t want to risk breaking the environment or, worse, causing any data loss.  If this is all new to you, and you don’t have a lab environment for trying things out, I would recommend getting some assistance.

Thanks,
Scott
