Question

Office 365 / OneDrive Synthetic full

Forum|alt.badge.img+7

I am currenting running 11.28
I have been running Office 365 / OneDrive backups for quite awhile now.  With the Incremental forever methodology it ends up keeping backups far past our corporate retention.   I would like to get these old backups to retire at some point.
In documentation it mentions that there should be an option for a Synthetic full when starting a backup.  I do not get that option.  Below is a screen shot from my Command Center with no Synthetic full option   Also a screen shot of the documentation.

I would appreciate if anyone can reply with screens shots of there Command Center if they have the Synthetic option, and what version of Commvault software they are running.

Thank you!

Documentation is incorrect. If you want to run a syn full you will need to run it from java console. There are several other community posts (including mine) that mention the same issue you are having.

According to release notes, syn full should be available in the command center in 11.36.

Nate,
In my 11.28 Java GUI (long live Java GUI!), there is no option to even run any backup.

HI @Farmer92

I believe you are looking at the documentation for the OneDrive for Business (Classic) Agent, which has been deprecated.  That agent allowed for incrementals and synthetic fulls.

The new OneDrive for Business Agent only supports incremental backups:

@Mike H ,
Thank you, good catch.  I forgot there was an older agent.  The date on the article was still current.

I guess that shatters my hopes of getting my old OneDrive backups to age off.   Incremental forever does not seem like a good strategy going forward unless we are ok keeping every copy of every file ever.   Disk space for backups is all free after all right.😉

Thank you.

@Farmer92 in the O365 Plan you can set Retain Deleted Items for x days, but even so, you are correct there is no space reclamation at this point. See this related reddit thread

@KurtLO Thank you Kurt.  I did see that.   It was last updated 8 months ago.  I am hoping Commvault has a team working on the reclamation and getting close to done?   This seems like a monster issue that lots of customers would be all over them about.   We are all losing space on our libraries.

I am hoping they do away we the painful “Incremental Forever” approach for these applications, and go back to the traditional Days / Cycles approach.

@Farmer92 It took us a long time to even get a definite answer that there is no way around this, space reclamation doesn’t happen period. They said they were working on something, have followed up and haven’t gotten a response. Absolutely this is a huge issue for those of us still using on-prem storage. We are looking at alternatives for M365 backups. I’m not counting on a solution anytime soon.

@KurtLO  Thank you for the info.   I guess I will have to do the same. :-(   I have been a Commvault Customer for over 20 years.   Feels like Commvault is not the company it used to be.  Support is suffering a lot. The product is starting to suffer.   I think ever since they sold their headquarters, things have been sliding down hill.   Very sad and disappointing.  I have apricated the product for so long it is hard to think about saying good by to it.

I think this was their quick fix to support O365 backups.   Thinking they would ‘fix’ it later.  I am guessing they have lost a lot of key development talent and they do not know how they are going to be able to back track now to support Synthetic full.
