Hi Community ,

Is there any SAP HANA expert here ? We are facing below serious issues with HANA Production backup --

Issues

  • When one of the mount path in library reaches its reserve space during HANA backup job , Instead of HANA backup routing to another mount path of the same library which has sufficient free space,  backup jobs goes to hang status .
  • We have to finally kill backup job from Commvault as it never comes out of hang status or fail on its own , after killing the HANA backup job it creates hang session on DB which doesn’t get cleared on its own and requires a DB restart which becomes an outage for mission critical production database .

SAP has clearly stated that this is not a bug with existing HANA version.

Let me know if anyone has experienced same issue or aware about this issue with HANA Backups ?

@Mohit Chordia ,

Do you see this behavior for GUI backups and application command line jobs or only for command-line jobs?
We may need to review this further internally. Please open a ticket and share the logs from a recent occurrence?

@Mahender Reddy

Hi Mahender,

We are seeing this behavior for HANA DB backup which is scheduled and triggered through Commvault. The behavior is not observed on HANA log backups  . Case # 220308-571 has been opened with support .

Sharing case closure:

Finding Details:

Customers HANA backups when failing because of mount path getting full would cause a session to be left open to HANA which could mean the customer had to restart their DB in some scenarios.

Solution:

The case was escalated to development and it was advised that customer update to MR30 or above as the issue of leaving a session open causing hanging has been fixed in MR30 and above.

Also been advised that mount paths should be shared for read/write + enable option to allow load balancing on multiple data paths during one backup job however not willing to make this change.
