Question

Tape new catalog

Forum|alt.badge.img+10

Hi,
i have a worm tape that was aged.
I will catalog the tape. The tape is moved to media by group → catalog. Then i said → all tasks → catalog.
the tape moved to the tape drive and catalog starts….but then nothing happens. 0%. After a while the tape moved out of the tape drive.
Do i make a mistake? How can i catalog the tape for restore data?

Thanks
Dennis

Hi @Dennis

So far you've completed step 1 from the 4 steps to complete the process.

Please review our steps on https://documentation.commvault.com/v11/expert/recovering_aged_data_getting_started.html

Next you will need to follow the remainder of these steps:

  1. View and merge the catalogued contents from the tapes. See Merging Content from Cataloged Tapes.

  2. Enable browse and restore of the merged jobs. See Enabling Browse and Restore of Aged Data.

  3. Restore the merged jobs. See Restoring Merged Backup Data.

Test it again:

Seems that no data is on the tape. But this is only the 1. WORM tape in the library and we definitifly backup data on it.

Hi @Dennis

Confirming you’re following the steps defined in https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/expert/cataloging_tape.html

Please also take note of the following notice:

Catalog is not supported for tape media that are written with EVAL license. You can use the TapeToolGui.exe that is available in the software_installation_directory/Base folder to identify tapes written with EVAL license. If the MediaID value appears similar to 2_BC_BARCODE, then the tape is written by EVAL CommCell. Here, 2 indicates that the tape is written by EVAL CommCell. For tapes written by a licensed CommCell, the CommCell ID appears in place of 2.

Can you confirm that the commcell with CommCell number (1031870) is not an EVAL license?

Please also take note that catalog is only supported for Filesystem & VMWare jobs.

If both of these conditions are satisfied, I’m afraid its best to engage customer support to review why the Merge operation is not populating the the tape.

If the tape does not contain filesystem and vmware backups and from a different commcell, you will need to go via the CommCell Migration to merge the original commcell that wrote the tape to the existing commcell.

Thank you

Try the gui……

The strange thing is that i had for some time restore data from that tape…..
No, we don’t use a Eval license. We have a valid Commcell-ID with support.
The data on the tape was from a VMWARE virtual agent backup.
I think i will open a ticket...hope that we find a solution :-)

It seems the issue you’re facing now is related to windows identifying the Tape drive rather the tape itself. The Drive is not available.

You can run a ScanSCSITool to check the which drives are currently available to the MediaAgent you’re running the TapeTool GUI from.

You may need to redetect and add library and drives to correct this issue.

Please reach out if you’re still unable to get this resolved.

Thank you

The CommCell in the screenshot is showing 1031870 / FBEBE, if this is not your current CommCell ID, then that would be the issue.

FBEBE is our ID, since ever :-) That’s the strange thing.
